BOYDS, MD. – The Georgetown University men's soccer team needed extra time to get the 2-1 overtime victory over the Butler University Bulldogs on Thursday evening in the semifinals of the BIG EAST Regular Season Championship presented by JEEP in Boyds, Maryland at the Maryland SoccerPlex. With the win, the top-seeded Hoyas improved to 11-4-3 overall and advanced to the championship game on Sunday against sixth-seeded Creighton.
Head Coach Brian Wiese
- "Jack (Panayotou) had two fantastic goals tonight, both worthy of getting us to a final. I thought our backline did a good job of dealing with some of the best attacking players in the conference. The fortitude that we showed in conceding a goal late and being able to rebound in overtime was great to see from this young group."
How it Happened
- Butler (10-6-3) had chances early, but it was Georgetown that got on the board in the 22nd minute. Sophomore Blaine Mabie centered the ball at the top of the box to freshman Jack Panayotou who fired a rocket into the back of the net to make it 1-0.
- The Bulldogs looked to even the score in the 34th minute when a corner kick was sent to the far post and headed back into the net. Junior goalkeeper Ryan Schewe would make the save, but fall to his left running into the post. He held his grip on the ball and didn't allow it to cross the goal line.
- The Hoyas would go into the break with the 1-0 advantage.
- Butler looked dangerous in the second half as the defense was forced to come up with some big stops.
- The Bulldogs would find the equalizer in the 77th as a ball went to an open DJ Hooks after a scramble and he was able to find the back of the net.
- Georgetown would have a golden chance in the 89th minute when a free kick was awarded just outside the box, Marlon Tabora's shot sailed just over the crossbar to send the game into overtime.
- Just five minutes into the first extra period, the Hoyas would take the lead on a goal from Panayotou as Tabora turned to his right and tapped it to the freshman who split the defense to make it 2-1.
- The Hoya defense would stand strong for the final minutes as GU came up with stops to get the victory.

- The Blue & Gray was awarded four corner kicks to the Bulldogs' five in the game.
