Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Hoyas Advance to BIG EAST Semifinal

WASHINGTON – The No. 5/10 Georgetown University men's soccer team battled for the 2-1 victory over the Seton Hall University Pirates in the BIG EAST Championship First Round at Shaw Field on Saturday. With the win in the wild game, the Hoyas improved to a mark of 12-2-2 on the year, while the Pirates drop to 8-6-3 for the season.

Head Coach Brian Wiese
  • "Seton Hall has some dangerous players and their setpieces are always are a worry and they scored off of a setpiece which was a fantastic goal by them. I think they have one of the top goalkeepers in the league and they made it hard for us. But we got a little bit of luck in the game, a little bit of mayhem, a little bit of madness and then a world-class finish from Matt Van Horn to win the game. It was really fun to see it."
How it Happened
  • The Hoyas were first to get on the board in the 34th minute with a goal from Kyle Linhares at the far post after a connection from teammates Marlon Tabora and Zach Zengue.
  • The Hoyas would continue to press and control much of the second half, and the 1-0 score would stand through halftime.
  • Seton Hall found the equalizer in the 50th minute with a goal by Hugo Gerbore that slipped past Hoya goalkeeper Ryan Schewe.
  • Seton Hall continued to look dangerous, but as the game intensified, neither team managed to add a goal.
  • Seton Hall's Konstantin Donalies made a dangerous challenge on Jacob Murrell in the 64th minute, resulting in a straight red card to put the Hoyas up a man for the remainder of the match.
  • The Hoyas continued to pressure Seton Hall but the Pirate defense kept the Hoya chances limited.
  • One of the best looks of the match came in the 79th minute when a shot from Blaine Mabie clanged off of the crossbar.
  • In the 86th minute, freshman Matthew Van Horn whipped a shot with his left foot to the upper left of the goal, finding the back of the net to give the Hoyas the lead.
  • Van Horn's first-career goal would prove to be the game winner, and the 2-1 Hoya victory would stand.
Of Note
  • Georgetown outshot Seton Hall, 9-2, and the Hoyas had four shots on goal while the Pirates managed one.
  • GU was awarded six corner kicks while Seton Hall had three in the game.
  • Schewe took the win in the net despite no saves in the contest.
  • This was Georgetown's first BIG EAST postseason contest that was not a semifinal or championship since 2012 as the BIG EAST moved from six teams to eight in the tournament this season which eliminated a first-round bye.
