Godinho’s Golden Goal Propels Hoyas Past Akron

WASHINGTON - The fourth-seeded Georgetown University men's soccer team needed extra minutes, but managed to defeat the top-seeded Akron University Zips 2-1 on Thursday evening in the BIG EAST Conference semifinal at the Maryland SoccerPlex in Boyds, Maryland. With the win, the Hoyas improve to 10-4-5 overall, while the Zips drop to 11-4-4 on the year.

Head Coach Brian Wiese
  • "With a few injuries coming in that we needed to manage, we used a ton of our roster today. We saw guys step up. Miles Avery came in for Tate (Lampman) when he couldn't go and played fantastic. Aidan Godinho with the goal which was so deserved with the way he has been playing. The list goes on and on seeing guys come in and do the job, especially against a team like Akron. We have the hardest strength of schedule in the country and Akron is far and away the best team we've seen. To find a way to persevere through that was good to see. We're back in the final, and we'll see if we can finish the job."
How it Happened
  • Three-consecutive corners for the Hoyas less than 10 minutes in resulted in some dangerous looks as the eventual goal for the Blue & Gray. In the eighth minute, junior Zach Zengue served the ball in from the left side and found graduate student Marlon Tabora at the top of the box. Tabora fired a screamer into the back of the net to put the Blue & Gray on top 1-0.
  • Georgetown continued to control the pace, but it was Akron that had a chance late as junior Tenzing Manske came up with a big stop to keep the Zips without a goal.
  • At the half, Georgetown led 1-0.
  • Akron found the equalizer in the 55th minute as a ball was served in and a shot taken, the shot deflected off of the back of NCAA goal leader Emil Jaaskelainen and into the net to knot it at one.
  • The squads would battle through regulation, but neither would find a way to break through.
  • Georgetown had Akron on its back foot for much of the overtime as the Blue & Gray pushed for the golden goal.
  • It would come in the 99th minute of action when junior Max Viera found freshman Aidan Godinho in the middle of the box. The rookie didn't hesitate, and fired past Akron keeper Mitch Budler for the game winner.
Of Note
  • Georgetown managed 15 shots in the contest, while Akron tallied 13.
  • GU had five shots on goal as did the Zips.
  • The Hoyas were awarded five corners to Akron's two.
  • Manske took the win in the net with two saves, while the Hoya defense was also credited with a pair of stops.
  • Godinho's goal was his first of his career on the Hilltop.
