Men’s Soccer Wins 2024 BIG EAST Championship

WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University men's soccer team won its sixth BIG EAST Championship in program history on Sunday with a 2-1 victory over the second-seeded Providence College Friars at the Maryland SoccerPlex in Boyds, Maryland. With the win, the fourth-seeded Hoyas improve to 11-4-5 overall, while the Friars drop to 12-5-3 on the year.

Head Coach Brian Wiese
  • "This is the third time we've been here at this venue in the final and, you know, Creighton deservedly beat us two years ago.  We had an awesome game with Xavier, and they came through on the other end of it. You're desperate for your seniors to find a way to get back in the conference championship, so I couldn't be happier for this group of players. They've been such a united group from day one, and we're using so many guys. I mean, just look at the number of players that played in the three matches of this tournament. It's an amazing team effort, and all the credit goes to the guys. Providence is an NCAA Tournament team, I think they should be a seeded team based on their quality, and they scored a banger of a goal to start off. I thought we did a great job not panicking, and we came out the second half and got the goal right away. Different guys stepped up different days to make the plays we needed. We talked about it from day one of back in January, about having players that won't allow us to lose in these moments, and today we had a lot of guys that were just that."
How it Happened
  • The Hoyas controlled the pace of the game early including a good look on goal that was saved by Lukas Burns.
  • The first goal of the game would come in the 16th minute as a shot from Israel Neto at the top of the box got past the GU defense to put the Friars on top 1-0.
  • Georgetown held the advantage in possession, but the Friars held the lead for the first 45 minutes of action.
  • The Hoyas opened the second half on fire generating a quick chance and a corner.
  • Off of the corner, junior Zach Zengue served the ball in at the near post. He found the head of senior Cole Parete who flicked it in past Burns to knot the contest at one.
  • Fifteen minutes into the second half, Providence began to gain some momentum and tested the Hoyas defense including keeper Tenzing Manske who was forced to volley a ball to save a goal.
  • The Hoyas were on the front foot for much of the second half, and the difference came in the 79th minute.
  • Freshman Mitchell Baker had it at the top of the box and got around the defense to find junior Eric Howard on the left side. The defender fired to the far post and connected to send the Georgetown fans into a frenzy.
  • Despite attempts by the Friars, the Blue & Gray stayed strong on defense for the final 10 minutes of action and secured the 2-1 victory as well as the program's sixth title.
Of Note
  • Georgetown managed 11 shots in the contest, while Providence tallied nine.
  • GU had five shots on goal as did the Friars.
  • The Hoyas were awarded five corners, while PC did not register one in the game.
  • Manske took the win in the net with four saves, while Burns had three saves for the Friars.
  • Parete and Howard both registered their first goals of the season in the match.
  • Maximus Jennings, Max Viera, Howard and Manske were all named to the All-Tournament Team.
