Hoyas Down Creighton to Advance to BIG EAST Semifinal

WASHINGTON - The fourth-seeded Georgetown University men's soccer team used a last-second first half goal to defeat the fifth-seeded Creighton University Bluejays 1-0 on Saturday afternoon at Shaw Field in the BIG EAST Conference quarterfinal Shaw Field. With the win, the Hoyas improve to 9-4-5 overall, while the Bluejays drop to 9-6-3 on the year.

Head Coach Brian Wiese
  • "I just thought it was a real team effort, we had a lot of guys that came and played and contributed. The goal said a lot about the mindset of the team today. We moved the ball up the field during the 10-second countdown, and scored with less than a second left. That goal was emblematic of the mentality of the group today. This was a playoff effort against a Creighton team that is one of the last teams you'd want to see in a postseason match because they're so dangerous and so good. This game was worthy of a BIG EAST Tournament."
How it Happened
  • Creighton controlled possession early in the match with a dangerous look just two minutes in.
  • The Bluejays continued to play at their own pace, but it was Georgetown with the first shot on goal as a header from freshman Mitchell Baker was saved.
  • On the other end of the field, Creighton had a good look at the far post but Georgetown keeper Tenzing Manke stretched to his left to get a finger on it and redirect it out of bounds.
  • The Blue & Gray began heating up as the Hoyas got in behind the defense and started to shoot. In the 26th minute, graduate student Marlon Tabora hit the crossbar on a laser from the right side as GU was pressuring.
  • The difference came in the final seconds of the first half as senior Cole Parete made a long run down the right side. He found sophomore Matthew Van Horn at the top of the box. Van Horn sent it to classmate Jack Heaps who crossed it across the box to a charging Mateo Ponce Ocampo. The sophomore connected on his first-career goal as time expired to put GU on top 1-0.
  • Both squads had a solid chance through the first 20 minutes of the second frame, but neither broke through.
  • The second half became physical, with a Creighton red card issued late in the contest.
  • The Bluejays searched for the equalizer, but it would not come as the Hoya defense stood strong to take the 1-0 victory and advance to the BIG EAST semifinals.
Of Note
  • Georgetown managed 11 shots in the contest, while Creighton tallied 10.
  • GU had five shots on goal while the Bluejays had three in the contest.
  • The Hoyas were awarded four corners to CU's six.
  • Manske took the win and the shutout in the net with three saves.
  • The keeper now has eight shutouts on the year and it marked GU's 11th of the season.
  • Ponce Ocampo's goal was his first of his career on the Hilltop.
