Heading out on the road...

It's a rainy day in the Nation's Capital, but it's an exciting day here at Georgetown as I am getting ready to head over to the airport and fly to New Orleans with the men's basketball team for the 2009-10 season opener at Tulane.

There's always a sense of anticipation that comes with a season opener and there's always a bit of a rushed feeling when you are heading out on the road.

The office is pretty quiet today.  I came in a bit late so I could drop my daughter off at school and get packed and ready for the trip.  I will drive over with Associate Athletics Director Dan O'Neil and we'll meet Bill Shapland, Jim Gilroy and Rich Chvotkin, who begins his 35th year of broadcasting Hoya basketball, at the airport.

This will be the first visit to the state of Louisiana for the men's basketball team since 1989, but it's a pretty special trip for sophomore center Greg Monroe, who is returning home.  Greg did a couple of interviews in the last two days and the most frequently-asked question was about whether he was excited to return home.  A pretty obvious question, but Greg did say that he was looking forward to seeing his mom and having some gumbo.

Speaking of food, I know that I am most definitely looking forward to sampling some of the native cuisine.  I've been to New Orleans once before, but it was about 12 years ago, so I'm looking forward to visiting again.

Like most weekends around the sports information office, it will be a busy one for all of us.  Barb Jonas took today off, but hits the road with the women's basketball tomorrow as they open the season this weekend at Missouri State.  I told Barb that I'd see her around Thanksgiving time, as the women's team is away for a good part of the next two weeks.

I am returning Saturday morning early so I can get back in time for the football game, as the Hoyas host No. 4 Richmond.  It will be a tough test for the team, no question.  I wrote about it earlier this week, but the attitudes and excitement of the members of our football team - from players to coaches - really impresses me.

A short note for now, but I'll write more during the trip to New Orleans.
