BIG EAST Hoops and the 'Cat Connection

Call me crazy, but the NFL Playoffs don't mean much to me.  I grew up a Redskins fan so it's been a long time since I really had anything invested in football in January.  So, for me, I'm ready for the heart of the conference season - and more specifically, I'm excited for some really good Georgetown men's and women's basketball games in the BIG EAST Conference.

On Saturday, our women's team, tabbed 24/18 in the national polls, will host Louisville at McDonough Arena.  It's a tv game as the BIG EAST Network will be covering it.  If you haven't been to a game yet - I would suggest showing up to this one.  It's a great environment and an incredible venue.  The women have been superb so far and are going for a program-best 14-straight wins.

If you haven't heard about her yet, you may want to keep an eye out for our hotshot frosh Sugar Rodgers (that's pronounced "Sugah") and her play on the court has been nothing shy of sweet.  Let's not forget Moni who has had an incredible season and has become a great leader on this team.  And I can't blog about women's hoops and not mention my bestie, Dri - I was lucky enough for her to come find me in the stands to say hello after Tuesday's win over Providence.

Sunday marks a huge BIG EAST men's hoops rivalry in a very important year.  Last year, Georgetown celebrated its 25th anniversary of the 1984 National Championship ... this year, Villanova is celebrating its 25th anniversary of the 1985 National Championship.  And for those of you reading this blog without knowledge of what I'm referencing - the Wildcats spoiled Georgetown's attempt to defend the national championship that year.  Tipoff between the 11/11 Hoyas and 4/4 Wildcats is at noon and the game can be seen locally on MASN.

And to end this blog with some fun facts - here's what I like to call the 'Cat Connection ... the man who hired me as an intern way back in July 2005 is Kevin Rieder - he no longer works here but his alma mater was Villanova and he's a big fan of the Wildcats.  Additionally our women's basketball SID Barbara Jonas once interned at Villanova right around the same time I was interning here.  Our first-ever field hockey events as SIDs were against each other ... Barb and the Wildcats won 7-1 that day.

* Last minute addition to the 'Cat Connection - David Berman, current Assistant Director of Media Relations at Villanova, interviewed for the internships at Georgetown and Villanova in 2004.  Offers were extended from both departments and Berman ended up as a Wildcat.  There's also a rumor that as an SID, Berman is nearing his 1,000th game (what a nerd).
