Some people might wonder what goes on at media day so here are a few highlights.
-This is when the BIG EAST announced all of its preseason awards. Frankly, these don't mean much because they are based on last year, however, it is always an honor to be recognized. Based on last year's preseason poll, the coaches weren't even close so we'll see if they are a little more accurate in 2010-11. That's the nature of the conference that anything can happen.
-One of the coaches will get up a speak about the BIG EAST and coaching in such a competitive conference. It might sound cliche but the BIG EAST is playing the best night in and night out. There is never a day off and that makes every game so important.
-The BIG EAST staff will be introduced. These are the people that work behind the scenes. It's an interesting job because they aren't just cheering for one team, but 16. It's a unique place to be, but an exciting one especially in such a talented conference. Knowing you will almost always have a team in the Final Four is a great feeling!
-We will break up for individual media which is where I come in. The conference office orchestrates an entire line of on-camera interviews as each SID ushers their coach and players to the correct place at the correct time. We also work with print and radio in attendance to make our coaches and players available to whoever is needs them. Finally, I do a little mingling to make sure to introduce myself and Georgetown to new media while also saying hello to people I may not have seen since last March.
BIG EAST Media Day is a great event that brings everyone together before things get crazy. It's held in Times Square which is an appropriate place for such an impressive conference. I'm sure I'll have more to say tomorrow, but for now I'm off to check into my hotel and letting the craziness begin!
