LIVE BLOG! BIG EAST Indoor T&F Championships Day One - Live from Akron!

| No Comments | No TrackBacks

Well, here we are yet again at another BIG EAST Indoor Championship! Can you believe it's already that time of year? We're in the championship portion of the indoor season and we are getting set for what is poised to be a great day of track here at the Stile Athletics Field House on the campus of the University of Akron. I know what you're saying - why Akron? But, if you could see this facility, you would understand why. This place was described by one BIG EAST employee as the "Disneyland of indoor track" and I have to say that I agree.

All-American Emily Jones has come off an incredibly successful season where she helped the Hoyas to a fourth-place performance at the NCAA Cross Country Championship and she can now call herself a BIG EAST Champion. The sophomore, in her first year of indoor eligibility, went out in her first BIG EAST Championship race and won it with ease. She stayed in the top three for the majority of the race and took over with four laps to go. Her conditioned pace was overtaken by in the penultimate lap but once the bell rang, Emily was ready to go. She made her move on the outside on the back straightaway and pulled away with 200 meters left. As the field looked as though it were running out of steam, Emily looked like she was hitting her stride. A sprint through the last lap, Emily timed in at 16:10.9 unofficially and shad a big smile on her face at race's end. Congratulations to Emily and the Hoyas!

4:36 p.m. UPDATE!

We're on our way with the women's 5,000-meter run! That means everything from here on out is a final! Get excited everyone - everything counts from this point on ... Emily Jones currently sits in third place of the women's 5K!

Shanique Dasilva is also in this heat. Go Hoyas!

2:08 p.m. UPDATE!

I don't know if Deidra Sanders had an epiphany that this is her senior season but she has been running so well in her final campaign as a Hoya. She just easily notched herself a spot in tomorrow's final of the women's 400-meter dash timing in at 55.75, winning the third heat. It looks like Chela Green is out of tomorrow's final but we're still waiting on London Finley to be back in action in heat five! Get pumped for Hoya track & field!

1:29 p.m. UPDATE!
Emily Menges automatically qualifies for Sunday's final in the women's 500-meter dash! She made a nice move on the back straightaway and pulled ahead before the final turn. She had a tough time holding on to the lead on the final straightaway but staved off the competition.

Current song playing at Stiles Field House: whatever the song is where the Black Eyed Peas ruined "The Time of My Life" from Dirty Dancing ... sigh

1:08 p.m. UPDATE!

Official word - Amanda Kimbers is in tomorrow's final. It looks like Christian Tobias' time in the 60-meter dash was not enough to get him to tomorrow's final. Consider this my official shoutout to Kenny Mitchell who finished up his eligibility with the track & field team last year and the football team two years ago. The 60-meter dash and the 200-meter dash were his bread and butter and we miss him this year! I had the chance to see Kenny at Hoyas Unlimited Athletic Recognition Event and he is doing really well. We miss you at the BIG EAST Indoor Championships, Kenny - it's just not the same without you!

12:49 p.m. UPDATE!

Unofficially Amanda Kimbers is in tomorrow's final. It looks like she is the fourth-fastest time of the time qualifiers which means she should just make it in. I haven't gotten official word but from the times I wrote down, looks like she's in!

Current song playing at Stiles Field House: AC/DC's "You Shook Me All Night Long"

12:41 p.m. UPDATE!
Amanda Kimbers runs a 7.61 in the 60-meter dash to take third place in the first heat. The winner of each heat plus the next four best times overall go to tomorrow's final. We will sit here and wait to see if Amanda qualifies.

12:34 p.m. UPDATE!

Biyerem qualifies for tomorrow's final on time and will be in lane one. Chris will be in lane four tomorrow. Next up is the women's and men's 60-meter dash. Look out for Amanda Kimbers (of SAK VS. fame) and Chela Green on the women's side and Christian Tobias on the men's side.

Current song playing at Stiles Field House: Cee Lo Green's "Forget You"

12:23 p.m. UPDATE!

Chris Kinney automatically qualifies for tomorrow's final with a 7.79 in the second heat of the trials. Biyerem Okengwu ran a 8.24 in heat one, taking fourth place. We will see if his time qualifies for the finals - I apologize, I could not write the results fast enough to determine if he was in the top six times beyond the auto qualifiers. I'll keep you posted, though!

Current song playing at Stiles Field House: Jay Sean's "Down"

12:11 p.m. UPDATE!

London Finley qualifies for tomorrow's final. London ran a 8.61 in the second heat and qualified on time as Villanova's Shericka Ward won the second heat (8.39). London's time was the fourth-fastest from the trials!

Current song playing at the Stiles Field House: Jason Derulo's "Whatcha Say"

The facility is spectacular. We've got a 320-meter flat track with seating along the home stretch and along the first turn. I've got a couple fellow SID's with some of the best seats in the house as we are in an elevated press area looking down on the finish line - and what that means is that my coverage will be that much better!

The first track event will be the women's 60-meter hurdles where we will be on the lookout for London Finley, a junior on the team who has quite the career. Get excited, it's almost that time! After that will be the men's 60-meter hurdles - both events are trials with the finals held tomorrow. Chris Kinney, a senior and two-time All-American, will attempt to become a back-to-back 60-meter hurdles champion. Biyerem Okengwu will also be competing in the event and will look to score some points for the Hoya men.

Hoya Saxa everyone - Hoya track & field is in Akron and we're ready to go!
