JOHN R. THOMPSON JR. INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETIC CENTER

Georgetown University officially dedicated the John R. Thompson Jr. Intercollegiate Athletic Center during ceremonies on the Hilltop on Thursday, October 6. The facility was named for the Hall of Fame men's basketball coach who led the Hoyas to the 1984 NCAA Championship and 596 wins in 27 years on the sidelines.

Construction of the John R. Thompson Jr. Intercollegiate Athletic Center began in October 2014. The two-year project included bulk excavation, underground utilities and foundations preparation, as well as street reconfiguration. Construction was substantially complete on August 13, 2016.

The Thompson Center transformed the athletics experience at Georgetown with a facility that now supports the demands our student-athletes face on a daily basis. It was built adjacent to McDonough Arena and, with roughly 144,000 square feet of newly-constructed space, will house:

  • New practice courts, locker rooms, team meeting rooms, lounge areas and coaches' offices for men's and women's basketball.
  • Sports performance/weight training facility and sports medicine/training room areas for all varsity student-athletes.
  • A student-athlete academic center, auditorium and team meeting facilities for all varsity sports programs.
  • Team-dedicated locker rooms for men's & women's basketball, men's & women's soccer and men's & women's lacrosse.
  • A new equipment room -- more than 4,000 square feet -- that will service all 29 intercollegiate sports and more than 750 student-athletes.
  • Hoyas Forever Hallway to honor the University's rich athletic tradition and history.
  • A courtyard for student-athletes that has a comfortable meditation area with a statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

The Lorry Michel Sports Medicine Center

  • Named for long-time men's basketball trainer Lorry Michel.
  • It will provide services for all of GU's 29 varsity sports & more than 750 student-athletes.
  • The sports medicine area offers a state-of-the art facility to house 11 full-time athletic trainers, four consulting team physicians, with two doctor's offices, including a room with video-conferencing ability to consult with specialists around the globe.
  • Student-athletes are offered access to state-of-the-art, whole body cryotherapy equipment, also known as a cryosauna. It is one of two facilities in D.C. with a cryochamber.
  • The space boasts Alter G Pro200 series anti-gravity treadmill for rehabilitative purposes.
  • It triples the square footage of previous facility and allows staff the ability to repurpose the McDonough Arena athletic training room to better accommodate our physical therapy initiatives, including the use of a newly-acquired biodex isokinetic testing machine, which provides baseline objective data to compare with follow-up testing upon completion of the rehabilitation program.

Academic & Leadership Center

  • Provides a home for the Cooper Athletics Leadership Program (CALP). CALP is the next step in the evolution of Georgetown's groundbreaking "Hoyas Lead" program, which for four years has required all freshmen and sophomore student-athletes to take developmentally-contextualized leadership classes.
  • Houses the academic support staff and a study lounge for all student-athletes that include private meeting rooms for small-group projects.
  • Has a student-athlete lounge that can be used for both studying or socializing.

Sports Performance Center

  • Houses more than 13,000-square feet for weight training and conditioning work.
  • Three different weight rooms are in the Thompson Center. The first floor weight room has 10,000-square feet of space and houses 20 custom-made Sorinex lifting stations along with a stone medicine ball wall and 55 yards of turf. Each rack comes equipped with Eleiko barbells and bumper plates. The men's and women's basketball teams each have their own 1,500-square foot weight rooms with five Sorinex weight racks.
  • The training facility takes part in Georgetown's Going Green Initiative by having cordless cardio equipment as well as floor-to-ceiling windows that allow natural sunlight to act as the main source of lighting.
