Wednesday Morning Musings

January 18, 2006

Holy cow! It's Wednesday morning already. I had to come up for air long enough to get to the MCI Center for the Hoyas' win against South Florida last night and to post this entry today. Keeping me submerged of late is a boatload of writing to prepare for the upcoming Hall of Fame dinner on Saturday, February 4, 2006. Fortunately, I've been working closely with Tim Hogan C'04, assistant director of Hoyas Unlimited on this project. The program bio's and slideshow scripts are all coming together this week. I can't help but be amazed by the accomplishments of
this year's class of Famers. The HoF ceremony and dinner is going to be a spectacular Georgetown affair.

And it will be Hoya-filled weekend. On Friday evening, February 3, 2006, separate receptions will honor the new inductees, sponsored by the various Hoya support organizations (for further info, click on the respective club): Spiked Shoe Club (Frank Gagliano & Ray Humphrey); the Hoya Netters Club (Penny Rickard & Lynn Moore); and the Georgetown Rowing Alumni Association and Women's Crew 30th Committee (Kelley Jones). On Sunday, the Hoyas will host Pitt at MCI with the HoF honorees to be introduced at half-time.

BTW, Tim has just put together a superb jam-packed issue of HOYA SAXA, the printed newsletter for Hoya Unltd. Look for it to hit your mailbox no later than the first week of February.

In case you're still wondering, tickets to this weekend's contest at MCI versus the Duke Blue Devils are long-since sold-out. Over 7,000 tickets were sold directly to members of the Hoya Hoop Club, many of whom already have their own season tickets. Let's hope that those extra seats all go to rooters for the Blue and Gray.

I know that a good number of seats will be filled by some of Georgetown's most loyal and active supporters. Many will visit campus starting tomorrow as part of the Alumni Admissions Program (AAP) annual chairmen's weekend. The AAP is an undertaking of the undergraduate admissions office that is supported by a cadre of over 4,000 alumni interviewers located in every state and throughout the world. These alums bleed blue and gray for Georgetown, meeting with more than 90% of all applicants each year. It is a program simply without equal among colleges and universities today. Now we're talking -- super-HOYA fans for the big game!

My picks for most interesting contests this coming week:

> Men's Basketball: It's all happening on Saturday starting with men's hoops at 1:30 pm. The Hoyas (11-4) will look to knock off undefeated Duke (16-0) next Saturday at the sold-out MCI Center. The #1-ranked Blue Devils host N.C. State tonight.

> Women's Basketball: With a game tonight on the road against Louisville, the Hoyas (8-7) will face a tougher foe on Saturday when they host Notre Dame (11-5) at 4:00 pm in McDonough Gym. The #24-ranked Fighting Irish are coming off an upset win last night against #10-ranked DePaul.

> Track & Field: Another Saturday event: the Hoya thinclads will compete all day in the Maryland Invitational to be held at the Prince George's Sports & Learning Complex in Landover, MD. Look for still more post-season qualifying times by the Hoya men and women in this latest outing.

> Swimming & Diving: The fourth Saturday event finds the Hoya swimmers and divers (M:3-4; W:6-4) heading up the road to American to face the Eagles in a dual meet.

Last week, the Hoya athletic teams posted an overall win-loss record of 5-3. Men's and women's indoor track had multiple top collegiate finishes and qualifying times.
