When Hoya Eyes Are Smiling . . .

March 17, 2006

Today is the feast day of my patron saint, Patrick of Ireland. May he spread his blessings upon Hoyas everywhere. Just one short week ago, the Hoyas faced the Orange of Syracuse University twice in a span of the four hours. Most of the Georgetown nation was focused on the second of these matchups - in the semifinals of the BIG EAST basketball tournament at the Garden. I joined several hundred faithful at the other contest - the fifth attempt by the Hoyas to defeat Syracuse in men's lacrosse in the Carrier Dome.

Midfielder Dave Paolisso recorded his first collegiate hat trick in the Dome. The ECAC recognized his efforts with player of the week honors. His father, Paul, used to hand off to Larry Csonka, while quarterbacking the football Orange over 35 years ago on this site, then known as Archbold Stadium

You can't shout "Fire" in a crowded theater, but former lax parent Guy Van Benschotten of Ithaca, NY showed there were no such limits in the Dome as he helped to spark the Hoyas with his patented cheers

Coach Dave Urick had agreed on the previous day to move up the start time to allow the Orange crowd to watch the second Georgetown-Syracuse game on television that evening. It turned out to be a fortunate decision. Not only did the Blue & Gray take down the Saltine Warriors, but the earlier finish allowed the team to travel back to DC that night and get an extra night of sleep at home - with a short week before they played a 7-0 Delaware team on Wednesday. As reported elsewhere, it was the Hoyas' first-ever victory over `Cuse in the Dome, and with last year's conquest in California, the first back-to-back wins against the Orange. Hoya, hoya laxa.

If I had a game ball to give for the Hoyas' 10-8 triumph, it would go to sophomore goalkeeper Miles Kass for his stellar play against the Orange

With the victory still sinking in for players Miles Kass, Reyn Garnett, and Dave Paolisso, Coach Urick, in the post-game press conference, emphasized the win as one of the program's major milestones now accomplished

Just as in the four previous visits to Syracuse, my lax teammate (and now NY Court of Claims judge) Nick Midey '72 and his lovely spouse, Marie MacGregor Midey '73, hosted the team for dinner the night before at their Manlius home for a sumptuous feast of a Syracuse original: "Dinosaur Barbecue." Fifth time was a charm - thanks to Nick and Marie for a very successful pre-game meal.
