Why Bother?

March 22, 2008

Halfway through the 2008 spring men's lacrosse season, #1-ranked Duke has all but been anointed national champions by many pundits by virtue of their undefeated record, their margins of victory and the fact that they are competing with five classes of players (last year's seniors, juniors and sophomores were all granted an extra year of eligibility by the NCAA for the cancellation by Duke of half a season in 2006).

It makes you wonder why should any team bother to finish their season. Why bother if the result is foreordained? Well, anything is possible. Just take a look at results from the NCAA basketball tourney this week. Upsets do occur and they happen often enough to conclude that all is not lost when facing a more highly-regarded team.

Today, the Hoyas will take the field against the all-powerful Blue Devils. If they are in fact the top team in the land right now, what better measure can the Hoyas take of themselves than to go against the best? The matchups, the focus and desire of the players, the strategies employed, and finally the ability of the team to play to its potential are the ingredients that will ultimately determine the outcome of the game.

Head coaches, assistants, and top players met in 2007 in the Hoya Yard: Duke lacrosse returns again this year to the Georgetown campus

Will the Hoyas be ready after two months of intense preparation to go against the top team in the country? We will find out today after 60 minutes of play.

That's why we bother.
