Unconventional Success

June 8, 2006

I am taking a long-awaited vacation this week, just posting briefly here to let the Hoya faithful know the cause of my absence. On the cusp of my departure, I attended parts of the Georgetown undergraduate reunion on campus. I had the opportunity to visit with many special friends from the five-year-increment classes ending in one or six. I'll post some photos when I return.

One of the highlights was catching up with a favorite alum from the class of 1986 (no way is it 20 years since he graduated!). One of the top attackmen on the lacrosse team during the decade of the 1980's, Mike Mauboussin took leadership to another level and, along with fellow co-captain Jim Woodhouse '86, helped to change the culture of that team from a fun extracurricular seasonal activity to a major personal commitment to athletics, second only to schoolwork. Along with larger forces at work, that change helped to precipitate the larger program transformation to come a few years later, with hiring of Dave Urick as head coach.

A government major in the College, who dove headlong onto Wall Street upon graduation, Mike has risen to become one of the most successful analysts in the nation. Two years ago, SmartMoney magazine listed him as one of its Power 30, an appraisal of "the most influential people on Wall Street". Mike is the author of More Than You Know: Finding Financial Wisdom in Unconventional Places (Columbia University Press, 2006) and co-author, with Alfred Rappaport, of Expectations Investing: Reading Stock Prices for Better Returns (Harvard Business School Press, 2001).

Currently employed by Legg Mason, Mike has his own website. Here you can find a wealth of links about him and his work. He has promised to visit campus in the fall and do a presentation about his field and new book.

Mike and his spouse, Michelle `86, are very supportive of Georgetown. In March, they hosted their classmates at a anticipatory gathering in their home in Darien, CT -- 86 days (get it?) before their reunion.

For me, it's enough to know he is a true Hoya and a true friend.
