Georgetown Leads BIG EAST with 269 BIG EAST All-Academic Team Selections

The BIG EAST Conference named more than 2,600 student-athletes to the 2008-09 BIG EAST All-Academic Team Monday morning. Georgetown led all 16 conference teams, earning 269 selections and topping last year's total of 256 selections.
To be eligible for the honor, a nominee must have competed in a BIG EAST-sponsored event, earned a varsity letter, attained a minimum grade-point average of 3.00 for the preceding academic year and completed a minimum of two consecutive semesters or three consecutive quarters of academic work, with a total of 18 semester or 27 quarter credits, not including remedial courses. The nominations are reviewed and approved by the BIG EAST Academic Affairs Committee.
Georgetown's 269 student-athletes honorees led the BIG EAST, followed by Villanova (231) and Notre Dame (228).
Women's rowing earned 57 selections, leading all teams that compete in the BIG EAST and every Georgetown team. The men's swimming & diving team, women's lacrosse team and women's cross country/track & field team tied for second among GU teams with 21 selections apiece.
