Georgetown Athletic Events to Highlight Homecoming Week
Oct. 17, 2005
Washington, D.C. - Georgetown University hosts its annual Homecoming Weekend, with festivities being held from Thursday, Oct. 20 to Sunday, Oct. 23.
The Hoya athletic program will be in full swing during the week, as five teams host events on the Hilltop.
The action begins on Tuesday, when the volleyball team plays cross-town rival George Washington. The match starts at 8 p.m. at McDonough Arena. Georgetown (5-14, 1-6 BIG EAST) plays five of its final nine matches at home.
On Wednesday, Oct. 19, the men's soccer team (8-6-0, 4-4-0 BIG EAST) plays its final non-league game of the season against perennial national power Creighton. This will be the third-straight game the Hoyas - who beat Notre Dame on Saturday, 1-0 - have played nationally-ranked teams at North Kehoe Field. Kickoff for the men's soccer game is slated for 3 p.m.
On Friday night, Hoyas Unlimited invites all former Georgetown student-athletes to a reception sponsored by Cathleen (C'87) and Dennis (C'86, L'89) Dee at Town Hall on Wisconsin Avenue. Catch up with your former teammates and kick off a weekend of activities.
On Saturday morning, the Georgetown Spiked Shoe Club, The Tombs and the Georgetown University Track Team are sponsoring the Third Annual Hilltop Challenge. Registration for the 5K race begins at 8:30 a.m. on campus in Red Square, with the race starting promptly at 9 a.m. The course winds through the Georgetown campus and the surrounding neighborhood. Awards will be given to the top three male and female runners, and all runners will receive Hilltop Challenge T-shirts and breakfast after the race. Proceeds from the race will benefit the Georgetown Spiked Shoe Club.
A time-honored tradition of Homecoming Weekend, the Homecoming Tailgate, which brings friends together for food and music before the football game, kicks off at 11 a.m. in the McDonough Parking Lot.
On Saturday, in the midst of the weekend festivities, the Hoya football team hosts long-time rival Fordham. Kickoff at the newly-christened Multi-Sport Field is slated for 2 p.m. The game will be available on HoyaVision through the Georgetown athletics website, www.guhoyas.com, with Chuck Timanus calling the play-by-play.
The men's golf team will host the annual Hoya Invitational on Saturday & Sunday, Oct. 22-23 at the Landsdowne Resort in Leesburg, Va.
The weekend closes out on Sunday, Oct. 23, with the field hockey team (3-9) hosting Maine at Kehoe Field. It will be the first of four home games in the final five to close out the regular season. The game is slated to start at 12:00 pm.
