Monday Morning Musings

December 19, 2005

Not to dampen spirits in this season of holiday cheering, but where do you draw the line between the enthusiastic and animated exuberance of home team rooters and mean-spirited fans gone wild? Those who witnessed the NFL game yesterday in DC between the Cowboys and Washington saw by the end of the game the balance clearly tip towards boys behaving badly.

On Saturday in McDonough against the Hatters of Stetson, it was not much better. The Hoyas were the superior team from the opening tip-off to the final buzzer. Students were full of merriment (with exams drawing to a close) and excited by the Hoya men playing a rare game in our campus gym.

The value of the proverbial 6th man cannot be underestimated and will be so important later on against such mortal enemies as Syracuse and Duke. But when a game turns into a rout, sportsmanship should dictate against piling on. I hope, when Savannah State coach Horace Broadnax comes to town on Wednesday, we remember that he was one of the classiest Hoya players in his day. He deserves our respect regardless of the score.

The half-time entertainment included an attention-grabbing show by a dozen youngsters who tried their hand at dribbling and dunking through a kid's hoop. Below I captured four of the crowd favorites.

Seven games into the regular season hoop schedule and one quarter of the season is complete. The 5-2 Hoyas will practice throughout Christmas week to be ready for their trip to the Sun Bowl Tournament next week.

My picks for most interesting contests this coming holiday week:

> Men's Basketball: The Hoyas (5-2) host Savannah State (1-10) on Wednesday evening at 7:30 pm at MCI Center. The Tigers are coached by former Hoya guard Horace Broadnax `86.

> Women's Basketball: The Hoyas (4-3) face cross-town foe American (3-6) on Rebekkah Brunson night next Thursday evening at 7:30 pm at McDonough Memorial Gymnasium. The Eagles edged Penn earlier this season as former Hoya coach Pat Knapp drew a technical foul in the closing minutes.

Last week, only the Hoya men's basketball team was in action. They posted an overall win-loss record of 1-0.
