Naughty or Nice

December 20, 2005

Did you ever find yourself doing exactly what you told yourself not to do? This phenomenon where the very intention to suppress a response has the paradoxical effect of producing it was described poetically in the "Tell-Tale Heart" by Edgar Allan Poe. He called it the Imp of the Perverse.

Last Wednesday, I went to the holiday party for the athletic department. It was held at the newly renovated Wagner Alumni House located at the corner of the 36th and O Streets, NW. If you haven't visited yet, you should make a point to do so. It belongs to all alums and is the one place on campus where you are the reason for being there.

While there, I was "drawn" to the Owen Room just off the rear patio where caricatures of alums adorn the walls, a la The Palm Restaurant. It so happens that on the caricature wall, there are a significant number of Hoya grads from the undergrad class of '68 -- thanks to mover and shaker Bob Andrews, who first conceived of the wall idea and then cajoled and arm-twisted his friends and classmates into pledging their support for the renovations and memorializing their faces on the wall of "fame."

Interestingly, a recent photo of eight members of the class who surfaced in Nevada this past November recently crossed my desk. It appears that these fifty-somethings volunteered themselves as an advance scouting party for Georgetown's annual grand celebration of alumni service and achievement, the John Carroll Awards Weekend, which will be held in Las Vegas next April 5-9, 2006. We know now they at least found a golf course.

Back to that pesky imp. I happened to graduate from high school in 1968, the same year that this golfing eightsome was leaving the Hilltop. But for many, many other reasons, 1968 was a pivotal year, a year that defined a generational divide, a year that separated the world into: Before and After. So, with this AFTER photo of these leading edge boomers, the imp in me could not resist taking a BEFORE look at these same leading alums.
