Mike "Mex" Carey was named Georgetown's Sports Information Director in September 2005, overseeing the day-to-day media relations for the University's 29 intercollegiate sports. Carey handles media relations for the men's basketball team, as well as for women's soccer, baseball and men's and women's golf. He has also served as the contact for football and men's lacrosse. While at Georgetown, he has served as the Media Relations Coordinator for two NCAA Men's Basketball Championships at Verizon Center, the regional rounds in 2006 and the first and second rounds in 2008 and in 2011. He joined the staff after a six-year stint as the Associate Director for Athletic Communications at St. John's University, where he worked with men's soccer, men's basketball, baseball, fencing and golf. Carey was the sports information director at Siena College in 1999, spent two years with Professional Sports Publications and was the communications director for the College Golf Foundation in 1996-97. He was also an intern in the sports information offices at Penn and Florida. A 1994 graduate of St. Bonaventure University with a bachelor of arts in journalism and mass communication, Carey is pursuing a master's degree in Sports Industry Management from Georgetown. Carey, a native of Troy, N.Y., is a past president of the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) and has served as a district coordinator for the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-America Committee for the past seven years. He and his wife, Cassie, reside in Bethesda, Md., and have a daughter, Meghan. |
