WASHINGTON - The Georgetown women's sailing team finished up at the Intercollegiate Sailing Association (ICSA) National Championships today, taking 11th overall following four total days of racing (Tuesday, May 21 - Friday, May 24) on Tampa Bay out of the St. Petersburg Yacht Club, hosted by USF, St. Petersburg, Eckerd College and the St. Petersburg Yacht Club.
The field of 18 teams in the finals competed on a trapezoid course with finals competition starting Wednesday afternoon and extending through Friday. A total of 18 races in both the A and B division were completed over the three-day affair with conditions being the best on Friday with gusts up to 14 knots and the temperature in the 80s on a sunny day in Tampa.
Georgetown had some struggles in the A division but managed to record a 184 in the 18 races. Paired with a 158 in the B division, the Hoyas finished 11th overall of 18 with a score of 342 points.
Dartmouth won the Gerald C. Miller Trophy for the Sperry Top-Sider / ICSA Women's National Championship with 203 points, 68 in the A division and 135 in the B division. St. Mary's College of Maryland took second with 241 points (120/121), followed by Cornell (267, 113/154), Boston College (268, 163/105), Stanford (268, 157/111), Yale (272, 183/89), College of Charleston (279, 163/116), Connecticut College(289, 121/168), Brown (316, 153/163) and USF (335, 160/175) to round out the top 10.
The Hoyas were one of nine teams to advance to the finals from the 18-team semifinal round. The nine advancing teams joined nine other teams that earned an automatic bid to the finals by winning their respective district championships.
With low wind conditions on Wednesday, May 22, the final day of the semifinals, the results from Tuesday's races stood with the Hoyas advancing as the fifth team based on point totals. The Blue & Gray finished with 112 points, 54 from the A division and 58 from the B division. Cornell led the field with 73 points (26, 47), followed by Dartmouth (83, 43/40), Eckerd (105, 65/40) and Brown (108, 54/54). Rounding out the advancing teams was USF in sixth (116, 34/82), followed by Connecticut College (122, 25/97), Roger Williams (129, 63/66) and Hobart / William Smith (146, 74/72).
The Hoyas will continue to compete in Tampa with the APS ICSA Team Racing National Championship for the Walter C. Wood Trophy Saturday, May 25 - Monday, May 27. The Gill ICSA Coed National Championship for the Henry A. Morss Trophy will be held Tuesday, May 28 - Thursday, May 30 all out of the St. Petersburg Yacht Club.
