WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University sailing team took fourth place at the Intercollegiate Sailing Association (ICSA) / APS Team Race National Championships that completed on Monday, May 27 following three days or facing (Saturday, May 25 - Monday, May 27) on Tampa Bay out of the St. Petersburg Yacht Club. The 14 teams that started the national championships were in contention for the prestigious Walter C. Wood Trophy.
With a new format, the event featured three sets of round robins with the pool getting smaller each time. The championships began with a round robin of all 14 teams in the competition; the round would determine places 9-14 with the remaining eight advancing to the second round robin.
Despite the closeness in the first round, the Hoyas were sure to clinch their spot in the next round robin with a spot in the top eight. There was a sail-off to determine the eighth-place team between Navy, Boston College and Hobart / William Smith. With Navy winning both sail-offs, the top eight were determined and the second round was ready to start right away. The conditions were ideal in the morning but with the wind dying down in the afternoon, not many races went off late Sunday.
Monday morning saw the completion of round two with only four teams that would advance to the round robin final. The teams sailed in FJs on a digital N course with 13 races completed in the second round (top eight) round robin. Following the round's completion, there was a three-way tie between Brown, College of Charleston and the Hoyas with a sail-off required to determine the third and fourth advancing teams. Georgetown advanced to the finals following the second sail-off of the championships, joining Yale, St. Mary's College of Maryland and Brown.
Following six races in the final four, Yale took the crown with a record of 18-5 followed by St. Mary's College of Maryland (16-7), Brown (14-9) and Georgetown (14-9).
The Hoyas utilized four different skippers in Chris Barnard, Nevin Snow, Sean Golden and Alex Post, pairing them with seven different crews in Katia DaSilva, Hilary Kenyon, Leslie Cowen, Victoria Lynch, Nancy Hagood, Annalee Leggett and Katie Olsen.
The Hoyas will continue to compete in Tampa with the Gill ICSA Coed National Championship for the Henry A. Morss Trophy Tuesday, May 28 - Thursday, May 30 out of the St. Petersburg Yacht Club.
