WASHINGTON - A complete day of racing on the St. Mary's River on Sunday saw the completion of the APS Team Race National Championships first round with the Hoyas advancing with the top eight. Races continued in St. Mary's City, Md., as eight schools continue to race toward the Walter C. Wood Trophy, with St. Mary's College playing host to the second in a trio of national championships.
The Hoyas finished the first round with a record of 10-5, good enough for seventh place. The Blue & Gray handed Yale its only loss of the championships thus far as they finished the first round with a record of 14-1. Yale (14-1), St. Mary's College (12-3), Navy (11-4), Roger Williams (11-4), Boston College (11-4), Tufts (10-5), Georgetown (10-5) and Stanford (10-5) advanced to the second round, a continuation of the round robin style from the first round.
The race officials moved through a slew of races on Sunday, ensuring that 18 races of the top eight round robin went off. The Hoyas moved up to sixth place, holding a record of 13-7 following Sunday's races.
Racing continues Monday with 10 more races to go in the top eight round robin. Once the top four have been determined the final round robin of the championship will begin and a national champion will be named.
