WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University sailing team finished fourth at the Middle Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association (MAISA) Coed Conference Championships, hosted by Cornell University over the weekend. The finish earns the squad a berth to the 2017 Intercollegiate Sailing Association (ICSA) Coed National Championship, held May 30-June 2 in Charleston, S.C.
The Georgetown coed sailing team battled through a difficult weekend to finish fourth at the MAISA Coed Conference Championship to earn a berth to nationals. The America Trophy, as the conference championship is called, was sailed on Cayuga Lake in Ithaca, N.Y. Cayuga is a tricky place to sail and without any previous regattas at Cornell, the Blue & Gray struggled from the outset trying to figure out the race course.
Over the course of the two-day, 30-race event the Hoyas battled hard but couldn’t quite get the consistency they are accustomed to. The Hoyas were three points out of third place (208) at the end of competition with Hobart and William Smith Colleges winning the event (129), followed by Navy (158) and Fordham (196). The top nine teams from the 18-team field advanced to the national championship.
The Hoyas have qualified for the trio of ICSA spring national championships for the 10th-straight year.
