Sailing Wins National East Semifinal

May 14, 2012

ICSA Eastern Semi Final - 1st of 18 w/120 pts

A Div: 3rd w/70 pts - Chris Barnard / Hilary Kenyon, Leslie Cowen

B Div: 1st w/50 pts - Evan Aras / Katherine Canty

The top ranked Hoya Sailing Team continued their season of success this past weekend in Annapolis, MD, by winning the Eastern National Semi Final in convincing fashion.  This marks the 4th time the Hoyas have won a National Semi Final in the five years of the current event format.  Eighteen teams competed in the regatta, with only the top nine qualifying for the Coed Dinghy Nationals to be held in Austin, TX, June 6-8.  The Western Semi Final was also being held in Annapolis this weekend, where another nine teams qualified for Nationals.

Saturday's warm temperatures limited racing early in the day as the breeze stayed light while the team waited for a Southwesterly seabreeze to fill in.  Once the regatta got underway however, the Blue & Gray were quick out of the gate in both A and B divisions and led overall after just five races.  While the scores would condense late on Sunday, the team was never bumped from the lead after that point.  Choppy water and puffy breeze made for difficult racing conditions but skippers Chris Barnard and Evan Aras and crews Hilary Kenyon, Leslie Cowen, and Katherine Canty were able to maintain a low points average throughout the weekend.

On day two, the team was off to a quick start again with two race victories in B Division.  After a significant wind shift, the breeze built to twelve knots and the Hoyas found their groove, staying consistently in the top 5 to prevent any other teams from making a sustained assault on the lead.  By the end of Sunday, the squad had won by 15 points and secured a spot in the ICSA Coed Dinghy Nationals where they will face the other seventeen qualifiers from this weekends two Semi Finals.

Georgetown Sailing now heads into two weeks of practice before heading to Austin, TX, for the ICSA Spring Nationals.  Women's Nationals will be held May 31-June 2, Team Race Nationals June 3-5, and Coed Dinghy Nationals June 6-8.  See GUHoyas.com and 2012nationals.collegesailing.org for more information.
