Swimming & Diving Defeats Providence, Falls to Rutgers to Conclude Regular Season

Samuel DeLise won two events as the Hoyas defeated Providence.

PISCATAWAY, N.J. - The Georgetown men's team defeated Providence 200-71, while the women outscored the Friars 208-70 and fell to Rutgers 181-94.5 on Saturday afternoon at the Rutgers Aquatic Center. The meet was the final competition for the Hoyas before BIG EAST Championships.

Freshman Samuel Delise (Redding, Conn./Joel Barlow), sophomore diver Jared Cooper-Vespa, junior Cal Rohde (Greenwich, Conn./The Peddie School), and freshman Daniel Ross (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) each won two events as the men cruised to victory over Providence in its final meet of the regular season

On the women's side freshman Ryan Murphy (Henderson, Va./Henderson) picked up a win in the 100-yard backstroke, finishing in 58.86, less than a tenth-of-a-second in front of the second place finisher from Rutgers. Murphy came back to finish second in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:06.61.

Freshman Molly Fitzpatrick (Manchester, N.H./The Derryfield School) earned a victory in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:13.52, followed by senior Jillian Carter (Norwalk, Conn./Convent of the Sacred Heart)).

The Hoyas' quartet of Kirstin Peterson, Delaney Bader, Shana McLaughlin and Erica Fabbri took first place in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:40.79, as the Hoyas also captured second and fourth places in the race.

 

 

Ross (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) earned a victory in the 50-yard freestyle in 22.16, as teammates Michael Young Fredericksburg, Va./Massaponex) and sophomore Martin Vanin (Cali, Colombia/Colegio Bolivar) took second and third, respectively. Ross also won the 500-yard freestyle in a time of 4:43.89.

In the 100-yard freestyle Rohde took first place with a time of 47.99. Rohde would also win the 100-yard backstroke in 54.02, with Jack Muehlheuser (Mars, Pa.) and Chandler Hinson (Chattanooga, Tenn./The Baylor School) rounding out the top three.

The Hoyas' freshman Jack McGuire (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill) won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:45.54, with Peter Kalibat (Princeton, N.J./Princeton) finishing in second place. Senior Michael Spinelli (Polytech Prep Country Day School) won the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 51.29. Freshman Edward Spinelli (Polytech Prep Country Day School) won the 200-yard IM in 2:00.11 with Matthew Glockenmeier (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge) and Liuben Chipev (Stony Brook, N.Y./Ward Melville) rounding out the top three.

DeLise won the 200-yard backstroke 1:59.04, while Greg Romanov finished second in 2:00.74. DeLise also won the 200-yard butterfly in 1:56.61.

Cooper-Vespa won the one-meter and three-meter diving competitions for the Hoyas. He scored a 254 on the one-meter and a 276.85 on the three-meter.

Georgetown also won the 200-yard freestyle relay with Michael Spinelli, Young, Michael Smigelski and Ross finishing in 1:27.14.

The Hoyas will return to competition for the 2015 BIG EAST Championships at Ithaca College in Ithaca, N.Y. The four-day championship meet begins on Wednesday, February 18.
