Sytnyk and Bistric Break School Records on Last Day of BIG EAST Championships

The BIG EAST Swimming and Diving Championships, being held at the Nassua County Aquatic Center in East Meadow, N.Y., concluded on Saturday evening with both the Georgetown men and women placing 11th overall. In the final session, senior Katie Amaro (Shreveport, La./Loyola Prep) placed 19th overall in 1650 yard freestyle, with a time of 17:33.14, just off her school record time of 17:27.50. Senior Jon Hayden (Woodbridge, Va./Osbourn Park) posted a 16:47.65 in the men's 1650 yard freestyle, which ranks among the top 10 all-time times in Georgetown history, and placed him 24th overall. Junior standout swimmer Laura Sytnyk (Nutley, N.J./Mount St. Dominic) set the school record in the 200 yard butterfly with a time of 2:08.72 in Saturday's afternoon session. Sytnyk previously held the record with a time of 2:08.80; a record she set in 2005. Freshman Goran Bistric (Saugus, Calif./William S. Hart) set the Georgetown record in the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:54.62 earlier this season. Bistric broke that record twice today, first in the preliminary round of the event with a time of 1:53.46. Bistric then swam the same event in a time trial and timed in at 1:52.44, for the new record. Both the men's and women's team currently stand in 11th place at the championships.
On the men's side, senior tri-captain Heath Walden (Scituate, Mass./Boston College High) turned in a 24th place finish in the 200 butterfly with a time of 1:56.68. Walden added a 37th place finish when he clocked in at 1:59.68 in the 200 freestyle. Also in the 200 freestyle, freshman Daniel Robinson (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) delivered a time of 1:56.32 to finish in 30th place. Fellow freshman David Ballinger (Pleasantville, N.Y./Pleasantville) was the top Hoya in the 200 butterfly with a time of 1:55.78, turning in a 21st place finish. In a 100 backstroke time trial sophomore Chris Ball (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) swam a 48.20, less than one second faster than older brother senior tri-captain Don Ball (Hatboro, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham), who timed in at 49.06.
For the women, senior tri-captain Corinne Rhodes (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West) finished the 200 breaststroke in 34th place with a time of 2:28.94. Rhodes also turned in a time of 1:07.60 in a 100 breaststroke time trial. Sophomore Christina DiNapoli (Saddle River, N.J./Immaculate Heart) also competed in the 200 breaststroke and finished in 43rd place with a time of 2:33.06. Sophomore Tori Maffey (Mountainside, N.J./Mount St. Mary) turned in the top Hoya performance in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:10.73, placing 31st. Junior Liz Nugent (Westport, Conn./The Hopkins School) was not far behind, earning 33rd place with a time of 2:11.29. Sophomore Claire Nugent (Westport, Conn./The Hopkins School) delivered a time of 2:09.31 in the 200 butterfly, enough for 23rd place. Fellow sophomore Caitlin Colling (Monson, Mass./Monson) finished the 100 freestyle with a time of 56.28, a 43rd place finish. . |
