WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University men's and women's swimming & diving teams are both second overall after three days at the BIG EAST Championships being held at Ithaca College in Ithaca, New York.
The women's team has 482.5 points through three days, trailing only Villanova (627.5). On the men's side, GU has totaled 523 points, behind Xavier (627). Georgetown earned two gold medals, as freshman Daniel Ross (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) won the 400-yard individual medley and freshman Molly Fitzpatrick (Manchester, N.H./The Derryfield School) won the 100-yard breaststroke, while the women's 400-yard medley relay time broke a program record to earn a silver medal.
The Hoyas took the top two spots in the men's 400-yard individual medley, as Ross earned Georgetown's first gold medal of the BIG EAST Championships finishing in 3:56.30. Freshman Samuel Delise (Redding, Conn./Joel Barlow) finished second in a time of 3:59.27.
Freshman Madeleine Quinn (Manhasset, N.Y./Manhasset) finished sixth in the women's 400-yard individual medley `A' final with a time of 4:31.72, while senior Casey Bandman (Richmond, Va./Deep Run) finished eighth overall in 4:32.34.
Junior Erica Fabbri (Yardley, Pa./Villa Joseph Marie) led three Hoyas in the `A' finals of the women's 100-yard butterfly, finishing tied for fourth in 55.68. Senior Jillian Carter (Norwalk, Conn./Convent of the Sacred Heart) finished sixth in 56.46, while freshman Kirstin Peterson (Hunterdon County, N.J./Hunterdon Central Regional) finished eighth in 56.97.
Sophomore Martin Vanin (Cali, Colombia/Colegio Bolivar) earned bronze in the men's 100-yard butterfly with a time of 49.82.
Freshman Bailey Page (Brentwood, Tenn./Ravenwood) finished sixth in the `A' final of the women's 200-yard freestyle in 1:52.59, while freshman Christine Ryan (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) finished seventh overall in 1:52.80.
Freshman Chandler Hinson (Chattanooga, Tenn./The Baylor School) earned GU's fourth medal of the day, capturing bronze with a time of 1:40.49 in the men's 200-yard freestyle. Sophomore William Leach (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) finished eighth overall with a time of 1:42.36.
Fitzpatrick was able to score points for the Hoyas earning gold in the women's 100-yard breaststroke, finishing with a time of 1:04.45.
The Hoya men had three make the `A' final, as junior Jack Muehlheuser (Mars, Pa.) was the top finisher at fourth overall in a time of 50.88. Senior Michael Young (Fredericksburg, Va./Massaponex) finished fifth in 50.94, while junior Cal Rohde (Greenwich, Conn./Peddie School) was seventh in 51.55.
Sophomore Jared Cooper-Vespa (Orange, Conn./The Hopkins School) earned his second silver medal of the week, winning the three-meter diving competition with 567.15 points. He earlier captured silver in the one-meter diving competition on Wednesday. Freshman Benjamin Goodfriend (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford) was fourth overall with 506.80 points.
The Georgetown women earned silver in the 400-yard medley relay, as Duncalf, Fitzpatrick, Fabbri and Page finished in 3:47.70, breaking a program record that was set in November at the Bucknell Invitational. The GU men earned bronze as Muehlheuser, Matt Glockenmeier (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge), Vanin and sophomore William Leach (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) finished in 3:23.87.
