ITHACA, N.Y. - The Georgetown University men's and women's swimming & diving teams each earned team silver medals after the final day of competition at the BIG EAST Championships on Saturday night at Ithaca College in Ithaca, N.Y.
The women's team finished second behind Villanova with 736.5 points for the second-consecutive season. On the men's side, GU finished second behind Xavier with 763 for the second-consecutive season, as Head Coach Jamie Holder was named the BIG EAST Men's Coach of the Year following competition.
Holder, in his fifth season on the Hilltop, has guided Georgetown to its two best conference performances over the past two seasons and has developed numerous program record holders.
Sophomore Katie Duncalf (Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace Greeley) and freshman Molly Fitzpatrick (Manchester, N.H./The Derryfield School) each earned gold medals and the Blue & Gray broke five program records on the final day of the championships.
Freshman Christine Ryan (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) opened the evening finishing fourth in the 1650-yard freestyle with a time of 17:07.56, to break a three-year old program record. Freshman Madeleine Quinn (Manhasset, N.Y./Manhasset) finished sixth overall in 17:09.02.
On the men's side senior Greg Romanov (Charlton, N.Y./Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) earned bronze with a time of 15:49.44, while freshman Chase Ladman (San Marcos, Calif.) finished fourth overall in 15:58.16. Freshman Daniel Ross (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) finished sixth in 16:01.85 and junior Austin Evenson (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Pine Crest School) finished seventh in 16:01.93.
Duncalf earned gold in the women's 200-yard backstroke, breaking her own program record, finishing in 2:00.81.
The GU men had three make the `A' final with freshman Chandler Hinson (Chattanooga, Tenn./The Baylor School) and junior Cal Rohde (Greenwich, Conn./Peddie School) finishing fifth and sixth respectively. Junior Jack Muehlheuser (Mars, Pa.) finished eighth overall.
Junior Erica Fabbri (Yardley, Pa./Villa Joseph Marie) earned silver in the 100-yard freestyle, breaking her own program record with a time of 50.84. Freshman Kirstin Peterson (Hunterdon County, N.J./Hunterdon Central Regional) finished eighth overall with a time of 52.17.
Sophomore William Leach (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) earned bronze in the men's 100-yard freestyle with a time of 45.38 to break a program record in the process. Hinson and senior Michael Young (Fredericksburg, Va./Massaponex) finished sixth and seventh, respectively.
Fitzpatrick earned gold in the women's 200-yard breaststroke finishing in 2:17.34, breaking her own program record from earlier in the season.
Freshman Samuel Delise (Redding, Conn./Joel Barlow) earned silver in the men's 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:04.50, while freshman Matt Glockenmeier (Basking, Ridge, N.J./Ridge) finished fifth overall in 2:05.60.
Senior Jillian Carter (Norwalk, Conn./Convent of the Sacred Heart) finished sixth overall in the women's 200-yard butterfly, while junior Lauren Ward (Marietta, Ga./Blessed Trinity Catholic) finished eighth in 2:07.69.
Sophomore Martin Vanin (Cali, Colombia/Colegio Bolivar) earned a fifth-place finish in the `A' final of the men's 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:53.72.
Senior diver Lauren Kahan (Westport, Conn.) earned silver in the women's one-meter diving competition with 481.55 points, while sophomore Sarah Jaklistsch (Hingham, Mass./Notre Dame Academy) and freshman Jen Sullivan (Hanover, Mass./Notre Dame Academy) finished fourth and fifth, respectively, to close the meet.
The women's 400-yard freestyle relay team of Peterson, Ryan, Bailey Page and Fabbri finished with a time of 3:26.30 to earn silver, while the men's 400-yard freestyle relay team of Hinson, David Chung, Ross and Leach earned their own silver medal with a time of 3:05.06.
