EAST MEADOW, N.Y. - The Georgetown University swimming & diving team completed the first day at the BIG EAST Swimming & Diving Championships at the Nassau County Aquatic Center, with the women’s team holding onto first place with 98 points and the men’s team in second, two points behind first place Xavier, with 72 points.
The Blue & Gray medaled in each of the five events on the first night of the conference championships, putting them in strong position going into the second of a four-day championship meet.
The Hoyas got started quickly, earning a silver medal in the women’s 800-yard freestyle relay with sophomore Bailey Page (Brentwood, Tenn./Ravenwood), freshman Laine Morgan (Ransom Everglades School), freshman Madeline Loniewski (Redford, Mich./Mercy) and sophomore Christine Ryan (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) finishing with a time of 7:24.79.
The men followed, earning a gold medal in the 800-yard freestyle relay with sophomore Daniel Ross (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township), freshman Henry Rogatz (Wilmington, Del./Charter School of Wilmington), sophomore Chandler Hinson (Chattanooga, Tenn./The Baylor School), and freshman Jacob Kohlhoff (Tega Clay, N.C./Fort Mill) finishing in a program-record time of 6:38.47.
In the third event of the evening, junior Sarah Jaklitsch (Hingham, Mass./Notre Dame Academy) earned a silver medal in the women’s 1-meter diving competition with a final score of 461.70.
The women’s 200-yard medley relay quartet of junior Katie Duncalf (Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace Greeley), sophomore Haley Owens (Placerville, Calif./El Dorado), senior Erica Fabbri (Yardley, Pa./Villa Joseph Marie) and Page earned a bronze medal with a time of 1:41.67, less than seven-tenths of a second behind the gold medal-winning Villanova foursome.
The GU men’s 200-yard medley relay squad also earned bronze, as sophomore Edward Spinelli (Brooklyn, N.Y./Polytech Prep Country Day School), freshman Arthur Wang (Wilmington, Del./Charter School of WIlmington), Martin Vanin (Cali, Colombia/Colegio Bolivar) and junior Will Leach (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) finished in a time of 1:31.09.
The BIG EAST Swimming & Diving Championships resume on Thursday morning at 10 a.m. at the Nassau County Aquatic Center.
