Georgetown Swimming & Diving Finishes Competition at BIG EAST Quad Meet

NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. - The Georgetown University swimming and diving team finished competition at the BIG EAST Quad Meet, as the men's team fell to Connecticut, 224-127 and lost to Villanova, 191-150. The women's team was defeated by host Rutgers, 226-127. They also fell to Connecticut 257-96 and to Villanova 273-80 on Saturday, October 30 at the Sonny Werblin Recreation Center. Paul Quincy and Victor Lopez-Cantera continued strong performances during the fall season with two wins apiece at the BIG EAST Quad Meet. The Hoyas received strong performances in the short distance freestyle races, as Lauren Opartny earned a victory in the women's 100 yard freestyle in a time of 52.82, just in front of Villanova's Natalie Elphick. In the 200 yard freestyle Sam Kietlinski finished second for the Hoyas in a time of 1:54.24. GU's women's 400 yard freestyle relay team of Kietlinski, Alexandra Van Nispen, Mallory Kiplinger and Opartny finished five-tenths of a second behind the winning Villanova team, in a time of 3:32.75. Paul Quincy turned in another strong meet for Georgetown, earning a victory in the men's 500 yard freestyle in a time of 4:43.84, defeating his next closest competitor by close to two seconds. Quincy followed up his win in the 500, by winning the 1000 yard freestyle in 9:45.94, finishing in front of the rest of the pack by just under 15 seconds. The Hoyas' Christian Kilgore finished fourth, just a little over a second behind the winner. Thomas Graham finished in second place in the 100 yard backstroke, just eight-tenths of a second behind Tomasz Sobek from Connecticut. Victor Lopez-Cantera stayed ahead of the pack in the short distance butterfly races. Lopez-Cantera captured the top spot in the men's 100 yard butterfly, winning by a close margin in a time of 51.55. He added a 200 yard butterfly win to his meet, finishing first in front of Connecticut's Nicholas Majtenyi in 1:53.99. Ray Zomerfeld continued the Hoyas run of first place finishes, earning victory in the 200 yard individual medley with a time of 2:00.04, just two-tenths of a second in front of his next closest competitor. Georgetown's 200 yard freestyle relay team earned a third place finish, with Spencer Walsh, Jens Brenninkmeyer, Matthew Mandel and Ken Ryan swimming the anchor. The Hoyas finished in 1:27.72 just behind the fingertips of Villanova. The Hoyas captured in second and third in the 400 yard medley, as Greg Germain, Brenninkmeyer, Lopez-Cantera and Mandel finished second in 3:13.05. Chris Finnegan, Ryan, Brad Crist and Quincy finished third in 3:18.69. Germain, Graham, Lopez-Cantera and Brenninkmeyer finished 1:37.98 in second place behind the team from Villanova in the 200 yard medley relay. Germain, Graham, Lopez-Cantera and Mandel finished third behind Connecticut and Villanova in the 400 yard medley relay to conclude the BIG EAST Quad Meet at Rutgers. The Hoyas swimming and diving team returns to the water at the Patriot Invitational at George Mason University that runs between Friday, November 19 and Sunday, November 21.
