Swimming & Diving Adds Nine Freshmen to Men's Roster

WASHINGTON - Georgetown University Swimming & Diving Head Coach Jack Leavitt has announced that 17 members of the Class of 2021 will join the Hoyas for the upcoming 2017-18 season. Of the newcomers, nine will join the men's side and eight will join the women's squad. In this edition, we will look the nine student-athletes on the men's side.

The incoming freshmen on the men's team will join a squad that finished second at the 2017 BIG EAST Championships for the fourth-consecutive year. The new Hoyas comprise of seven swimmers and two divers and hail from seven different states, including three from New York.

"This is a really deep and talented class," Leavitt said. "We are adding nine guys who will address some needs for us and that can make an impact at the BIG EAST Championships in their first year."

Chelmsford, Mass. / Central Catholic
Backstroke / IM
Was a four-year member of the swimming & diving team at Central Catholic High School, serving as a team captain as a senior ... Was Central Catholic's high point scorer in each of his final three seasons (2015-17) and was named team MVP his senior year after going undefeated in all individual competitions ... Named all-conference all four years and both a Boston Globe and Boston Herald All-Star as a junior and senior ... Holds nine records at Central Catholic and the Massachusetts Division 1 State Meet record in the 100-yard backstroke ... Also swam for the Patriot Swim Club ... In the classroom, was a member of the National Honor Society.

Jonathan Furlong
Londonderry, N.H. / The Derryfield School
Dive
Was a four-year member and a two-year captain of swimming & diving team at The Derryfield School ... Won the 2015 and 2016 New Hampshire State Diving Championships and finished third in 2017 ... Named the 2017 Derryfield Male Athlete of the Year and received the 2015 and 2017 Class of 80 Sportsmanship Award ... Also competed for Solo Aquatics, placing 12th at the 2016 AAU National Diving Competition ... Also a four-year member of the Derryfield soccer team, a three-year member of the rowing team and one-year member of the track and Nordic skiing teams ... Helped lead the soccer team to three-straight state championships (2014-16) and the state semifinals in 2017 ... In the classroom, was an AP Scholar with Distinction and earned highest honors all 12 trimesters.


 

 

Nathaniel Goldfarb
Columbus, Ohio / Columbus Academy
Breaststroke / IM
Was a four-year member of the swimming & diving team at Columbus Academy, serving as a team captain as a senior ... Was a two-time state runner-up in the 100-yard breaststroke as well as the 2016 runner-up in the 200-yard medley relay and in 2017 in the 400-yard freestyle relay ... Helped lead Columbus Academy to a third-place finish at the 2017 Ohio state championships ... Holds the school record in the 100-yard breaststroke, the 200-yard medley relay and the 400-yard freestyle relay ... Also swam for the Ohio State Swim Club (2016-17) and the Greater Columbus Swim Team of Ohio (13 years) ... Placed third in the 100-yard breaststroke at the 2016 Ohio Sectional Meet ... Was also was a member of the soccer team, leading Columbus to three-straight district championships and serving as a team captain his senior year.

Was a member of the Ridgefield High School swimming & diving team for one year in 2014 ... Earned All-Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference (FCIAC) honors as a freshman ... Also swam for the Wilton Y Wahoos Swim Club for four years ... Helped lead the Wahoos to the 2014 SC YMCA National Champions as well as the three-time LC YMCA National Champions ... Named a two-time USA Swimming Scholastic All-American (2015-16).

William Powers
Larchmont, N.Y. / Brunswick School
Freestyle
Was a four-year member of the swimming & diving team at the Brunswick School, serving as a team captain as a senior ... Was named Brunswick's 2015 Swimmer of the Year ... Holds the Brunswick school records in the 200- and 500-yard freestyle as well as the 200- and 400- freestyle relay ... Was a two-time winner New England Prep School Athletic Conference (NEPSAC) champion in the 500-yard freestyle ... Helped Brunswick place third at the 2017 NEPSAC Division 1 Championships after finishing last in 2014 ... Also swam for the Badger Swim Club, competing in the finals of the 2015 and 2016 Senior Metropolitan Championships ... In the classroom, was an honor roll student ... Father, Jeffrey ('81), also swam for the Hoyas and his sister, Jacqueline, was a member of the Class of 2006.

James Simone
Larchmont, N.Y. / Brunswick School
Freestyle
Was a four-year member of the swimming & diving team at the Brunswick School, serving as a team captain as a senior ... Helped lead Brunswick to the 2016 Fairchester Athletic Association (FAA) championship ... Also swam for the Badger Swim Club ... Was also a member of the water polo and cross country teams at Brunswick ... In the classroom, was a two-year member of the academic honor roll and two-year member of the academic high honor roll.

Andrew Stange
St. James, N.Y. / Saint Anthony's
Freestyle / Butterfly
Was a two-year member of the swimming & diving team at Saint Anthony's High School ... Helped lead Saint Anthony's to the 2016 New York State (NYS) Federation Championship and was a member of the NYS Record 200-yard medley relay team ... Was the 2017 NYS champion in the 200-yard freestyle and holds the Saint Anthony's team record in the 100- and 200-yard freestyle as well as the 100-yard butterfly ... Was the 2017 NYS Scholar-Athlete Award recipient, a two-time All-American (2016-17), a two-time member of the Newsday All-Long Island First Team (2016-17) and was given the Saint Anthony's High School MVP Award ... Swam for the Three Village Swim Club and was named a two-time USA Swimming Scholastic All-American (2016-17) and a 2017 Academic All-American ... In the classroom, was an AP Scholar and a member of the National Honor Society and the Model United Nations Club.

Was a two-time conference champion in the 100-yard freestyle and the 100-yard breaststroke, as well as the 2016 100-yard breaststroke regional champion ... Named first team all-conference as both a junior and senior, first team all-region as a junior and second team as a senior as well as first team all-state as a senior ... Helped Thomas Jefferson win the 2014-15 Virginia High School League (VHSL) 5A State Championship and finish second at the 2013-14 VHSL 6A State Championship ... Was the two-time Suburban One League American Conference 1-meter diving champion (2016-17), a three-time Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) state qualifier (2014, 2015, 2017) and a 2017 PIAA state finalist ... Holds the Cheltenham 1-meter six- and 11-dive records ... Earned the team's Coach's Award as a sophomore ... Also dove for TNT Diving from 2011-17, where he was a three- time USA Diving National Qualifier and six-time USA Diving Zone qualifier ... In the classroom, was a four-year member of the honor roll and the National Honor Society and was his class' salutatorian.
