Four-Run Ninth Inning Leads Georgetown Past Davidson, 11-8
Feb. 20, 2010
Senior shortstop Tom Elliott (Blue Bell, Pa./St. Joseph's Prep) had four hits, senior left fielder Billy Cupelo (Franklin, Mass./Bishop Feehan) drove in three runs and senior second baseman Chip Malt (Boston, Mass./Buckingham, Browne & Nichols) hit a two-run single to highlight a four-run ninth inning as the Georgetown baseball team came back from a one-run deficit en route to an 11-8 win over Davidson at Wilson Field in North Carolina Saturday afternoon.
It was the second-straight win to start the season for the Hoyas, who improve to 2-0, while Davidson falls to 0-2.
The Hoyas had taken a 6-0 lead after scoring three runs in the fourth and three more runs in the fifth, respectively, but Davidson responded with five runs in the bottom of the sixth and three in the seventh to take an 8-7 lead.
Georgetown had runners on the corners in the eighth and did not plate the tying run, but jumped on Davidson reliever Matt Siwiak in the ninth, loading the bases with none out and proceeding to score four runs on five hits.
Junior catcher Erick Fernandez (Hialeah, Fla./Hialeah) hit a leadoff single, junior third baseman Sean Lamont (Houston, Texas/Bellaire) walked and Elliott singled to load the bases. Cupelo tied the game with a sacrifice fly to left, plating freshman Justin Leeson (Exton, Pa./West Chester), who pinch-ran for Fernandez. Junior first baseman Dan Capeless (Centerville, Mass./Boston College H.S.) broke the tie with a double to left, scoring Lamont and giving the Hoyas a 9-8 lead.
Malt followed with a single down the left field line as Georgetown widened the gap, with Elliott and Capeless scoring to give the Hoyas an 11-8 lead.
Freshman Neal Dennison (Houston, Texas/Lamar) (1-0) worked 1.1 innings of shutout relief to earn the win, allowing two hits and striking out a pair. Junior Jared Cohen (Phoenixville, Pa./The Haverford School) earned his first save of the season by working a perfect ninth inning and retiring four batters.
The Hoyas started their scoring in the fourth inning as senior center fielder Tommy Lee (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) drew a leadoff walk from Ian Horkley, moved to third on a failed pickoff attempt and scored on a base hit to left from Lamont. Elliott singled and moved to second on the throw to third as Lamont advanced and both runners scored when Cupelo singled to left, giving the Hoyas a 3-0 lead.
Georgetown extended its lead to 6-0 with three more runs in the fifth. Runners were on first and second when sophomore designated hitter Rand Ravnaas (Fort Worth, Texas/All Saints Episcopal) singled and Lee was hit by a pitch. Sophomore right fielder Andy Lentz (Farmington Hills, Mich./Brother Rice) attempted a sacrifice bunt, but Horkley's throw to first was high, allowing both runners to score. Lentz, who moved to second on the error, scored on a single from Elliott.
Sophomore starter Will Harris (Winter Park, Fla./Trinity Prep) threw 5.2 innings, allowing five runs, four earned, on four hits with two walks and one strikeout. Freshman Charles Steinman (Rockville Centre, N.Y./Chaminade) gave up three runs (two earned) in one inning before Dennison and Cohen closed out the Wildcats.
Elliott went 4-for-5 with four singles, two runs scored and one RBI, while Ravnaas went 3-for-4 with a double and two singles and Cupelo hit a single and three RBI.
The two teams will play the series finale tomorrow at Wilson Field at 1 p.m.
