Curtiss Pomeroy hit an RBI single in the bottom of the ninth to lift Georgetown past Air Forace, 4-3.
March 3, 2013
Freshman shortstop Curtiss Pomeroy (Shrewsbury, Mass./Saint John's) hit an RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning to score freshman Nick Collins (Carthage, N.C./Union Pines) with the winning run as the Georgetown baseball team broke a 3-all tie and beat Air Force, 4-3, at South County Field in Punta Gardens, Fla. Saturday afternoon.
The win evens Georgetown's record at 3-3 overall, while Air Force falls to 0-1.
Leading 3-2 in the top of the ninth, senior pitcher Neal Dennison (Houston, Texas/Lamar) hit Air Force's Matthew Roberts to lead off the inning. After a sacrifice bunt and a stolen base, Garret Custons hit a sacrifice fly to tie the game.
The Hoyas wasted no time in the bottom of the inning, with Collins lacing a double down the left field line off AFA's Ben Yokley. After two strikeouts, Pomeroy delivered a single up the middle to give Georgetown the walk-off win.
Dennison picked up the win for the Blue & Gray, throwing 2.2 innings and giving up one run on one hit with two strikeouts in 2.2 innings.
He had come in on in relief of redshirt sophomore Jack VanderLinden (Dallas, Texas/Episcopal), who was impressive in his third start of the season. VanderLinden threw 6.1 innings and gave up two runs (one earned) on four hits with only one walk and four strikeouts.
Georgetown had taken a 1-0 lead in the second when a double from senior left fielder Paul Bello (Towaca, N.J./Delbarton) drove home senior infielder Danny Poplawski (Bellevue, Wash./The Overlake School), who had also doubled.
Air Force tied the game in the top of the third, but the Hoyas took the lead back in the bottom of the inning. Pomeroy hit a leadoff double, moved to third on a groundout from freshman catcher Eric Webber (Stockton, Calif./Saint Mary's) and scored on a groundout from senior center fielder Justin Leeson (Exton, Pa./West Chester).
The Cadets tied the game again in the fifth inning, but GU wrested the lead back in the bottom of the eighth. With one out, Leeson and Junior first baseman Steve Anderson (Albany, N.Y./Guilderland) singled to put runners on the corners and a sacrifice fly from junior outfielder Christian Venditti (Newtonville, Mass./St. Sebastian's School) pushed Leeson across with the go-ahead run.
Georgetown continues play in the Snowbird Classic on Sunday, March 3, playing Michigan. Junior lefty Matt Hollenbeck (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) (0-1) will be on the bump for the Hoyas.
