Georgetown Baseball Falls to Penn, 13-4
March 8, 2010
WINTER PARK, Fla. - The Georgetown University baseball team (4-4) allowed the University of Pennsylvania Quakers (1-0) to score runs in each of the first five innings, as Penn went on to defeat the Hoyas 13-4 on Saturday at Alfond Stadium.
Georgetown used eight pitchers, including four over the first 5.0 innings, with junior RHP Tommy Isaacs (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./Bolles) taking the loss.
The Quakers had taken a 6-0 lead before the Hoyas' offense was able to answer in the bottom of the fourth inning. Erick Fernandez (Hialeah, Fla./Hialeah) drew a lead-off walk and moved to second on Sean Lamont's (Houston, Texas/Bellaire) single to rightfield. Dan Capeless (Centerville, Mass./Boston College H.S.) would follow with an RBI single down the rightfield line to score Fernandez. A throwing error would allow Lamont to cross the plate on the same play, cutting the Quakers lead to four, 6-2.
Penn would bring eight batters to the plate in the top of the fifth inning and take advantage of two errors to score four more runs to put the game out of reach.
Dan Godefroi (Andover, Mass./Andover) hit his first home run of the season with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning for the Hoyas third run. Godefroi drove in another run in the bottom of the eighth inning, a sacrifice fly to centerfield that allowed Lamont to score GU's fourth and final run of the day.
Vince Voiro earned the victory for Penn, allowing three runs on seven hits, while striking out six and walking two over 7.0 innings.
The Hoyas return to action during Rollins College Baseball Week on Monday at 7 p.m. when they take on Rollins College. The Blue and Gray will face the Quakers again on Tuesday at 11 a.m.
