Isaacs Throws Five Shutout Innings, Fernandez Drives in Four and Georgetown Uses Eight-Run Eighth Inning to Beat UMBC 12-2
April 5, 2011
BETHESDA, Md. - Redshirt junior Tommy Isaacs (Ponte Vedre Beach, Fla./Bolles) threw five scoreless innings and senior catcher Erick Fernandez (Hialeah, Fla./Hialeah) drove in four runs as Georgetown scored seven runs in the eighth inning to break open a close game en route to an 11-1 win over UMBC on a sunny, but windy, afternoon at Shirley Povich Field.
The win broke a three-game losing streak for the Hoyas, who improve to 18-12 overall, while the Retrievers fall to 4-17 overall.
Georgetown scored 12 runs on 15 hits, with Fernandez leading the way by going 3-for-5, with a home run and a double, two runs scored and four RBI. Junior right fielder Rand Ravnaas (Fort Worth, Texas/All Saints' Episcopal) went 2-for-5 with a double and a single, two runs scored and one RBI, while sophomore shortstop Mike Garza (San Antonio, Texas/Douglas MacArthur) went 2-for-3, with a double, single, two walks, two runs scored and one RBI, senior first baseman Dan Capeless (Centreville, Mass./Boston College HS) hit two singles and drove in two runs and junior catcher Kevin Johnson (Peabody, Mass./Belmont Hill) hit two singles and scored two times.
Leading 4-1 in the eighth inning, the Hoyas scored eight runs, with a bases-loaded, two-run double from Fernandez the big hit. Georgetown loaded the bases with none out after a single from Johnson, junior second baseman Andy Lentz (Farmington Hills, Mich./ Brother Rice) was hit by a pitch and sophomore center fielder Justin Leeson (Exton, Pa./West Chester) reached on a bunt single. Ravnaas drove in a run with a single and the bases were still loaded after Garza walked, bringing in Lentz. Fernandez followed with a shot to the fence in left, scoring two runs and making it 8-1.
Capeless followed with a single to right and moved to second on an error, with both Fernandez and Garza scoring on the play to make it 10-1. A double to left from Lamont made it 11-1 and after a bloop double down the right field line from sophomore Paul Bello (Towaca, N.J./Delbarton) put runners on second and third, sophomore Corbin Blakey (Alpharetta, Ga./Centennial) drove in a run with a ground out, making it 12-1.
Isaacs had a strong outing, throwing 5.0 innings and giving up no runs on three hits with three walks and two strikeouts before giving way to freshman Alex Baker (Charlotte, N.C./Ardrey Kell).
The Hoyas had jumped on top in the bottom of the first with a run. Ravnaas hit a one-out double to left was at second after a walk to Garza and runners were on the corners after Fernandez reached on a fielder's choice. Capeless then roped a single to center, plating Ravnaas with the first run of the game.
Georgetown had runners in scoring position in the second and third, but could not increase its lead. Lentz hit a two-out double down the left field line in the second and in the third, Garza hit a leadoff double and was on third with one out, but did not cross the plate.
The Hoya lead grew to 2-0 in the fourth thanks to a pair of UMBC errors. Johnson hit a one-out single and moved to second on an error. After Lentz was hit by a pitch, a pickoff attempt from UMBC reliever Luke DiBlasi went past first base and allowed Johnson to score. In the fifth, Fernandez hit his fourth home run of the season over the field fence, scoring Garza after a leadoff single and pushing the Hoya lead to 4-0.
Baker gave up a run on two hits over two innings and handed the ball off to senior reliever Mike Seander (Cranston, R.I./St. Raphael Academy), who worked a scoreless eighth inning.
Georgetown is back in action on Wednesday, April 6, visiting Navy. First pitch against the Midshipmen is slated for 3:30 p.m.
