Senior Thomas Polus gave up four runs in four innings in a 4-1 loss to St. Mary's.
April 7, 2013
WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University baseball had runners in scoring position several times during the game, including with the bases loaded in the eighth, but could not get additional runs across the plate and St. Mary's posted a 4-1 win over the Hoyas at Louis Guisto Field in Moraga, Calif. Saturday afternoon.
It was the second-straight loss for the Hoyas, who fall to 17-10 overall, while the Gaels improve to 11-20 with the win. The three-game series closes on Sunday, April 7, with first pitch slated for 4 p.m. (ET).
Senior pitcher Thomas Polus (Crown Point, Ind./Andrean) took the loss for Georgetown, throwing 4.0 innings and allowing four runs (three earned) on six hits, with two walks and four strikeouts.
The Gaels took a 1-0 lead in the second, but the Hoyas tied the game in the top of the third. Freshman shortstop Curtiss Pomeroy (Shrewsbury, Mass./Saint John's) drew a leadoff walk and moved to second when junior Christian Venditti (Newtonville, Mass./St. Sebasitan's) singled. A wild pitch moved both runners up and Pomeroy scored on a throwing error by the catcher, tying the game.
St. Mary's broke the tie in the bottom of the inning and then added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth, pushing the lead to 4-1.
The Hoyas, meanwhile, had chances, but could not capitalize. In the first, Pomeroy and senior third baseman Trevor Matern (Santa Clarita, Calif./Hart) started the game with singles, but Pomeroy was thrown out going to third. Matern moved to second on the throw and was on third after a one-out single from senior center fielder Justin Leeson (Exton, Pa./West Chester), but St. Mary's starter Jordan Mills retired the final two batters to end the threat.
In the sixth, Venditti drew a leadoff walk, moved to second on a ground out and runners were on the corners with two out after senior Corbin Blakey (Alpharetta, Ga./Centennial) reached on an error.
In the eighth, the Hoyas loaded the bases with two out after a single from freshman catcher Nick Collins (Carthage, N.C./Union Pines), a double from senior second baseman Danny Poplawski (Bellevue, Wash./Overlake) and a hit by pitch on Blakey, but St. Mary's recorded the final out to keep the game 4-1.
Georgetown went down in order in the ninth.
