WASHINGTON - Senior center fielder Justin Leeson (Exton, Pa./West Chester) hit a two-out RBI double in the sixth inning, lifting the Georgetown baseball team to a 7-6 win over St. Mary's in the final game of a senior at Louis Guisto Field in Moraga, Calif. Sunday afternoon.
The win salvaged the third game of the three-game series with the Gaels, as the Hoyas improved to 18-11 overall, while St. Mary's falls to 11-21.
Senior third baseman Trevor Matern (Santa Clarita, Calif./Hart) reached base on two-out error in the top of the 11th, stole second and scored when Leeson roped a double to right, giving the Hoyas the 7-6 lead.
Freshman pitcher Gino Basso (Glen Allen, Va./Godwin) retired the side in order in the bottom of the inning, securing the win.
The Hoyas trailed 1-0 in the fifth but scored a pair of runs to take a 2-1 lead. Senior second baseman Danny Poplawski (Bellevue, Wash./Overlake) and junior first baseman Steve Anderson (Albany, N.Y./Guilderland) hit singles to open the inning and put runners on the corners. A fielder's choice from sophomore shortstop Ryan Busch (Roseville, Minn./Falcon Heights) brought in Poplawski, with Anderson reaching second on an error. Freshman Eric Webber (Stockton, Calif./St. Mary's) followed with an RBI single to score Anderson give GU a 2-1 lead.
Georgetown pushed its lead to 3-1 in the sixth when Matern reached on an error, stole second, moved to third on a fielder's choice and scored on Poplawski's sacrifice fly.
The Gaels, however, scored four runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 5-3 lead, hitting sophomore starter Matt Hollenbeck (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) for four runs on nine hits over five innings. Senior reliever Neal Dennison (Houston, Texas/Lamar) gave up one run in the sixth and went two innings, striking out two batters.
The Hoyas cut into the St. Mary's lead in the seventh, with Busch hitting a leadoff single, stealing second and scoring on a Matern single, making it 5-4. Georgetown took the lead with two runs in the eighth, loading the bases with one out after a double from junior Christian Venditti (Newtonville, Mass./St. Sebasitan's), a hit by pitch on Poplawski and an infield single from Anderson. Venditti was thrown out at home on the next play, but a single to left from Busch brought in Poplawski and Anderson scored on an error, giving GU the 6-5 lead.
St. Mary's countered in the bottom of the eighth, scoring a run off reliever Charles Steinman (Rockville Centre, N.Y./Chaminade), but the senior shut down the Gaels in the ninth. Senior reliever James Heine (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill) threw a scoreless 10th inning before Leeson's hit gave the Hoyas the lead in the next inning and Basso closed the win out.
Georgetown is back in action on Tuesday, April 9, hosting George Washington at Shirley Povich Field at 3 p.m.
