BETHESDA, Md. - The Georgetown University baseball team scored only one run over two games as Butler swept a doubleheader, 5-0 and 7-1, on Sunday at Shirley Povich Field. With the two losses, the Hoyas fall to 27-24 overall and 4-11 in BIG EAST play, while the Bulldogs improve to 30-18 and 6-9 in conference action.
Game One: Butler 5, Georgetown 0
The Hoyas only managed three hits, dropping the seven-inning first game, 5-0.
Simon Mathews (West Haven, Conn./Hopkins School/Temple) started on the mound and threw the seventh complete game of his career, allowing five runs, four earned, on 10 hits, while striking out six. His fifth strikeout, in the sixth inning, was his 79th of the season, setting the Georgetown single-season record.
Butler got on the board in the top of the first, scoring two runs on a two-out single and home run to take a 2-0 lead. The Bulldogs added single runs in the third, fifth and seventh innings to extend their advantage to 5-0.
Georgetown's best opportunity came in the bottom of the third inning when the Hoyas loaded the bases with two outs on a single and two walks, but Jake Kuzbel's (Ashburn, Va./Stone Bridge) hard line drive was snagged by the first baseman to end the inning.
Game Two: Butler 7, Georgetown 1
Georgetown could not overcome an early deficit, mustering only six hits as Butler won game two, 7-1.
Kevin Superko (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley/Phillips Andover) started on the mound and went four innings, allowing four runs on four hits while striking out two. Nick Morreale (Lake Elmo, Minn./St. Thomas Academy/IMG Academy) pitched 1.1 scoreless innings of relief with two strikeouts and Jimmy Swad (Washington, D.C./St. Albans) fired 1.2 hitless innings with three strikeouts.
Butler opened the scoring with three runs in the top of the second on a double, two singles and a hit-by-pitch.
The Blue & Gray got a run back in the bottom half of the inning as Ryan Weisenberg (Parkland, Fla./San Ramon Valley [Calif.]) hit an RBI ground out to score Eric Garza (San Antonio, Texas/Ronald Reagan/TCU/San Jacinto), who had doubled to lead off the inning, and cut the deficit to two, 3-1.
The Bulldogs answered back in the top of the third with a solo home run, extending their lead back to three, 4-1. They scored three runs off of a trio of GU pitchers in the top of the ninth to go up, 7-1.
