Georgetown Baseball Positional Preview: Starting Pitchers

Feb. 12, 2018

WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University baseball team opens the season on Feb. 16 when it travels to Wake Forest University. As the first pitch of the 2018 campaign draws closer, GUHoyas.com will take an in-depth look at each of the team’s position groups. This edition looks at GU’s starting pitchers.

“Our starting pitchers have the talent and ability to carry this team,” Georgetown Pitching Coach Eric Niesen said. “We bring back two upperclassmen who combined for 27 starts last year, and a sophomore who gained valuable experience in the bullpen as a freshman. Additionally, we have some other arms who are going to compete for starting roles.”

Senior Kevin Superko (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley/Phillips Andover) returns to the weekend starting rotation after making 13 weekend starts last year as a junior, going 6-3 finishing with a 6-3 record and a 4.15 ERA in 13 starts covering 78.0 innings. He tied for the team lead in wins, ranked third in innings pitched and was fourth with 43 strikeouts.

Sophomore Nick Morreale (Lake Elmo, Minn./St. Thomas Academy/IMG Academy) has secured a weekend starting role to open the season, transitioning from his bullpen role last season. As a freshman, Morreale set the program’s single-season record with 30 appearances, going 0-2 with three saves, a 6.61 ERA and 29 strikeouts in 31.1 innings pitched.

The Hoyas final weekend rotation spot will come down to junior Jack Cushing (Flower Mound, Texas/Marcus) and freshman Owen Lamon (Herndon, Va./Oakton), with the other likely to work out of bullpen while starting most midweek games. Cushing made 14 starts in 2017 as a sophomore, tying for the team lead with six wins and recording a 4.80 ERA in 84.1 innings. He ranked second on the pitching staff in both innings pitched and with 79 strikeouts, which is also the second most in GU’s single-season history.

Sophomore Noah Abdalla (Raleigh, N.C./North Highlands Regional [N.J.]) and freshman Jacob Grzebinski (Bellaire, Texas/Emery Weiner) could also compete for starting roles, while mostly seeing action out of the bullpen. Last season, Abdala had five saves and a 5.66 ERA in 20.2 innings over 18 appearances.

Check back in to GUHoyas.com later this week for a preview on Georgetown’s bullpen.
