Hoyas Falter In the Ninth, Lose To C.W. Post 5-4
WASHINGTON, D.C. (Mar. 16) - C.W. Post broke a 4-4 tie in the ninth inning when an error allowed the Pioneers' Ryan Cox to score the winning run to beat Georgetown 5-4 in collegiate baseball action on March 16 at the GU Baseball Stadium.
The Hoyas (9-12) built a 3-0 lead in the first two innings. Jim Vankoski (Jr., Aston, Pa./Strath Haven) hit a RBI single, and crossed the plate off a Pioneer error in the first. In the second inning, Josh Corman's (Sr., Lexington, Ky./Lafayette) sacrifice fly scored Jay Catalano (Jr., Hunting Valley, Ohio/University School). A Hoya error in the third allowed T.J. Ramos to score for C.W. Post to trim the GU advantage to 3-1. The Pioneers made it 4-3 in the fifth assisted by Tony Sudano's two RBI home run and Melvin Baez's RBI single. GU would tie it up in the bottom of the inning behind a RBI walk from Marc Carlini (Jr., Alexandria, Va./Episcopal).
Georgetown, which had a total of four hits in the game, left 10 men on base, and squandered two bases loaded situations. P.J. Martinez (So., Washington, D.C./Landon School) started on the mound for the Hoyas going 5-1/3 innings allowing three earned runs off nine hits. Paul Perillo (So., Dobbs Ferry, N.Y./Ardsley) picked up the loss. Brian Nielsen pitched two innings of no-hit ball for the Pioneers to earn the win.
GU has now lost four straight games headed into BIG EAST Conference play this weekend against Rutgers. The Hoyas will travel for a three-game series against the Scarlet Knights beginning with a doubleheader at 12:00 noon on Saturday, followed by a 12:00 noon tilt on Sunday.
