WASHINGTON - The Georgetown baseball series with Towson will go on as planned this weekend. The two teams will play a three-game series this weekend with Friday and Saturday to be played at Georgetown's Shirley Povich Field while Sunday will be played at Towson's John B. Schuerholz Park.

The two teams met last month at Wake Forest during the season-opening weekend. The Tigers took a 9-1 decision over the Hoyas. Evan Ryan (Omaha, Neb./Creighton Prep) had a pair of hits and Eric Webber (Stockton, Calif./Saint Mary's) and Christian Venditti (Newtonville, Mass./St. Sebastian's School) each had a base knock.

Georgetown Baseball Falls To Towson 9-1
The Georgetown baseball team (0-3) dropped a 9-1 decision to Towson (3-0) on Monday, closing out a tough season-opening weekend for the Hoyas. The game was played at Wake Forest's Gene Hooks Field.

Georgetown's weekend's starters...

Matt Smith (Cranberry Twp, Pa./Seneca Valley) will take the ball for the Hoyas in Friday's series opener. Smith enters with a 1-3 record and a 4.23 ERA in a team-high 27.2 innings over five starts. Freshman David Ellingson (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands College Park) will move up to pitch in Saturday's slot. Ellingson is 2-0 with a 1.17 ERA in five appearances, including two starts, covering 23 innings of work. Sunday's starting pitcher has not been determined.

Hoyas' quick hitters...

Georgetown comes into this weekend with an 8-10 overall record. They have won five of their past eight games after posting a 7-6 win over George Washington on Wednesday.

Against the Colonials, the Hoyas took a 7-3 lead into the ninth inning before holding on for the win. Nick Leonard (Washington, D.C./Maret) picked up his first career win, pitching five innings giving up two runs, just one earned. He struck out one. Nick Collins (Carthage, N.C./Union Pines) had three hits, his second consecutive three-hit game and third in his past seven games. AC Carter (Winter Park, Fla./Orangewood Christian) had two hits, including his first home run of the season, two RBI and three runs scored. Jake Kuzbel (Ashburn, Va./Stone Bridge) had three RBI and Evan Ryan (Omaha, Neb./Creighton Prep) added an RBI and was one base three times. Joseph Bialkowski (Raleigh, N.C./Needham B. Broughton) pitched three innings of relief, giving up just one run and striking out one.


 

 

The Hoyas' offense continues to be led by senior first baseman Steve Anderson (Albany, N.Y./Northfield Mt. Hermon Prep (Mass.)/Guilderland) who comes in batting .348 in 18 games. He has a team-high 12 RBI and is tied for the team lead with three doubles and one home run. Sophomore Nick Collins (Carthage, N.C./Union Pines) is also batting over .300, entering at .347 after recording three-hit performances in each of his past two games. Anderson and Collins rank fifth and sixth, respectively, in the BIG EAST in batting average.

Earlier this week, Collins was named to the BIG EAST Honor Roll after batting .500 (10-20) with three RBI, four runs scored and a .600 on-base percentage in six games last week.

Georgetown's pitching staff is led by Matt Hollenbeck (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) who has a 1.08 ERA in six appearances out of the bullpen. He leads the team with 24 strikeouts, including registering 13 punch outs in 7.2 innings of relief in two outings in Florida. Ellingson has a 1.17 ERA in five appearances, including two starts and is second with 21 strikeouts. Tim Davis (Vienna, Va./James Madison) has a 1.69 ERA in six relief appearances, including two saves.

Scouting Towson...

Towson enters the weekend at 10-7 on the season. The Tigers defeated Monmouth on Thursday afternoon to snap a four game losing streak. The played tough on Wednesday at No. 3 Virginia, ultimately falling 5-3 to the Cavaliers.

As a team, Towson is batting just .241 on the season, but has a meager 3.50 team ERA. The Tigers are led offensively by Brandon Gonnella who is batting .292 in 17 games. Dominic Fratantuono is right behind him at .291 with a home run and eight RBI. Kurt Wertz leads Towson with 12 RBI.

The pitching staff is led by Nick Cioffi who, in two starts on the season, has a 0.84 ERA. Chris Acker has a 2-1 record and a 2.51 ERA in six starts. Bruce Zimmerman leads the staff with 20 strikeouts in 23.1 innings over five starts. He also has a 3.47 ERA and a 3-1 record. Gonnella also serves as the Tigers closer and has a 1.38 ERA and five saves.

What's up next...

Georgetown will play a midweek game at Coppin St. on Wednesday, March 26, with first pitch set for 3 p.m. The Hoyas will then travel to Louisiana for a three-game series at Grambling St. over next weekend.
