WASHINGTON – Senior first baseman Steve Anderson (Albany, N.Y./Northfield Mt. Hermon Prep (Mass.)/Guilderland) was named the BIG EAST Player of the Week on Monday following his performance this weekend in Georgetown’s three-game series at Grambling State. Sophomore pitcher Matt Smith (Cranberry Twp, Pa./Seneca Valley) was also selected to the BIG EAST Honor Roll, the second consecutive week he has earned the nod.
Anderson batted .417 (5-12) with a .462 on-base percentage and an astounding .833 slugging percentage as the Hoyas won two out of three at Grambling State. He had five RBI and scored a pair of runs while accumulating 10 total bases. In Saturday’s 6-1 win, Anderson went 2-5, including a three-run triple to break a 1-1 tie in the eighth inning. After another two-hit performance in game one of Sunday’s doubleheader, Anderson smoked his second homer of the season in game two, a two-run shot, in the Hoyas 5-3 win.
After pitching a career-high 7.2 innings last weekend, Smith topped that performance, setting a new personal best by going eight innings on Saturday in the 6-1 win. The sophomore allowed just one run on six hits while striking out eight, which tied a career-high. He improved to 3-3 on the season and lowered his ERA to 3.12.
This is the sixth and seventh times this season that a Georgetown baseball player has been honored by the BIG EAST, and second time for both Anderson and Smith. Smith was named to the Honor Roll just last week after pitching 7.2 innings in a 6-2 win over Towson. Additionally, sophomore catcher Nick Collins (Carthage, N.C./Union Pines) was named to the Honor Roll on March 17. On March 11, senior outfielder Patrick Camporini (Safety Harbor, Fla./Clearwater Central Catholic) and junior Matt Hollenbeck (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) both earned nods to the Honor Roll. Anderson was also selected back on Feb. 24.
The Hoyas (11-13) will play a midweek game on Tuesday against George Washington. The game, which is set to start at 3 p.m., will be played at the Colonials' home field, Barcroft Park, in Arlington, Va. Next weekend, Georgetown opens BIG EAST play with a three-game series against Xavier at Shirley Povich Field.
On Saturday, the Hoyas, in partnership with the St. Baldrick's Foundation, will shave their heads following their game with the Musketeers. GUGS will be at the game, serving food and the Blue & Gray will honor local kids who are fighting childhood cancer. The team has already raised over $35,000 for St. Baldrick's.
