WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University baseball team begins a stretch of playing seven out of the next eight games on the road when it makes the short trip to play UMBC on Tuesday evening in a nonconference, midweek matchup. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. at the Retrievers’ Alumni Field in Catonsville, Maryland. Live stats and a video stream will be available at GUHoyas.com.
The Hoyas (13-20) are riding a six-game winning streak, most recently sweeping George Mason in a three-game series over the weekend. Jack Cushing (Flower Mound, Texas/Marcus) pitched 7.0 strong innings and James Gabor (Wyndmoor, Pa./William Penn Charter School) and Jake Bernstein (Frederick, Md./St. John’s College HS) hit back-to-back home runs in Friday’s 7-3 victory. Bernstein homered again and Brent Killam (Nokomis, Fla./Venice) picked up his fourth win of the year in a 6-2 win in the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader. In game two, Alex Bernauer (Sunnyvale, Calif./Fremont) hit a towering grand slam to tie the game after the Hoyas trailed by five runs. GU scored four runs in the top of the ninth inning to complete the sweep with a 10-7 win.
Bernstein was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on Monday after batting .467 (7-for-15) with two home runs, a double, five RBIs and five runs scored in Georgetown’s 4-0 week. After recording an RBI in a midweek win at Navy, Bernstein had three-straight multi-hit games against George Mason. He went 3-for-5 with a home run, two runs scored, three RBIs and a stolen base on Friday before collecting two hits, including his second home run in as many games, in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader. The senior recorded two more hits, including a key ninth-inning double, and scored two runs in the series finale.
This is Bernstein’s first career honor roll selection, and the fifth of the season for the Blue & Gray.
For the season, Eddie McCabe (Norwalk, Conn./Norwalk), who has started all 30 games at shortstop, leads the Hoyas with a .320 (41-for-128) batting average and has team highs of nine doubles and 27 RBIs. He ranks fourth in the BIG EAST in RBIs and fifth in base hits. Bernstein leads the squad with a career-high three home runs. Ryan M. Davis (Danville, Calif./San Ramon Valley) is 13-of-14 in stolen bases, ranking second in the conference, while Austin Shirley (Strafford, Pa./Conestoga) is 8-of-9 to rank fifth.
UMBC enters Tuesday’s matchup with a 10-18 overall record, and owns a 4-5 mark in America East play after being swept in a road series at UMass-Lowell over the weekend. The Retrievers are batting .226 as a team and are led by Zach Bright and AJ Wright, who have 25 hits apiece. The pitching staff owns a 6.13 ERA and has given up 23 home runs while opponents are batting .277 against the Retrievers.
