WASHINGTON - Georgetown baseball freshman pitcher Kevin Superko (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley/Phillips Andover) was named the BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week on Monday, as announced by the conference. The honor recognizes Superko's performance on Sunday in GU's 2-1 win at Xavier.
Superko was absolutely dominant in picking up his second win of the season as the Hoyas completed the doubleheader sweep on Sunday. He pitched 8.1 innings with 10 strikeouts, both of which are career highs for Superko and season highs for the Georgetown pitching staff. He gave up just two hits while not walking anyone. After allowing a leadoff single on Sunday, which was promptly erased on caught stealing, Superko retired 24-consecutive batters until a one-out single in the ninth. He lowered his season ERA 75 points from 4.73 to 3.98.
This is Superko's first-career weekly honor and the 13th for the Hoyas this season. Matt Smith (Cranberry Twp., Pa./Seneca Valley) was also selected as the BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week back on March 16. He has also been named to the Weekly Honor Roll twice and nine other Hoyas have earned honor roll recognition.
GU will host Navy for a midweek game on Wednesday, with first pitch scheduled for 7 p.m. St. John's will visit Shirley Povich Field next weekend for a three-game, BIG EAST series.
