Baseball Ready for Important BIG EAST Series with St. John's

WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University baseball team is set for an important three-game, BIG EAST series this weekend, hosting St. John's at Shirley Povich Field. Hoyas Drop Tough Series Finale, 5-4, to St. John's
St. John's University scored the eventual game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth, defeating the Georgetown University baseball team, 5-4, in a BIG EAST Conference game on Sunday afternoon at Jack Kaiser Stadium. GU is now 14-19 on the season and 1-2 in BIG EAST play while St. John's moved to 16-11-1 overall and 2-1 in conference action.

Georgetown (24-20, 2-7 BIG EAST) is coming off an 8-7 victory over District rival George Washington on Tuesday night. Brent Killam (Nokomis, Fla./Venice) picked up the win with a career-high 2.1 innings, striking out a personal-best four. Michael DeRenzi (Mendham, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) and Sammy Stevens (Birmingham, Mich./Brother Rice) each had two hits and three RBI to lead the offense, while Zach Racusin (Morristown, N.J./Salisbury School/Marist) added three base knocks.

For the season, Racusin leads the team with a .359 batting average and has a team-high 65 hits. Jake Kuzbel (Ashburn, Va./Stone Ridge) is second, batting .352 while leading the Hoyas with five triples and 39 RBI and tying for the team lead with four home runs and 11 doubles. DeRenzi is tops on the team with 38 runs scored and 11 stolen bases.

St. John's, ranked No. 15 in the country, enters the weekend with a 32-7 overall record and a 6-3 mark in BIG EAST play. The Red Storm lead the conference in most offensive categories, including topping the league with a .328 batting average, which ranks fourth nationally. The pitching staff also leads the BIG EAST with a 2.64 ERA, which is fifth in the country.

Kuzbel has reached base safely in 39-consecutive games, which is the longest such streak this season for the Hoyas and is tied for the fourth-longest active streak in the country. In the 18 games since he joined the everyday lineup, Eric Garza (San Antonio, Texas/Ronald Reagan/TCU/San Jacinto) is 27-for-75 (.360) with two home runs, nine doubles, 13 runs scored and 19 RBI. He has multi-hit efforts in 11 of the past 16 games and has an RBI in 10 of the last 15.

Upcoming Milestones
Senior right-handed pitcher Simon Mathews (West Haven, Conn./Hopkins School/Temple) enters Friday night with 70 strikeouts, needing just nine more to break the single-season record.

What's Coming Up Next
Following this weekend, the Hoyas will jump back out of conference play, hosting the University of Maryland Eastern Shore for a doubleheader on Wednesday. The two teams will play a seven-inning game at 5 p.m., with a nine-inning game starting immediately afterward.
