WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University baseball team closes out the 2014 season with a non-conference matchup at the University of Maryland-Baltimore County (UMBC). First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. at the Retriever’s Alumni Field in Baltimore.

Georgetown is coming off of a series win at Butler this past weekend, taking two out of three from the Bulldogs to improve its record to 19-28 overall and 5-13 in the BIG EAST. On Monday, senior first baseman Steve Anderson (Albany, N.Y./Northfield Mt. Hermon Prep (Mass.)/Guilderland) and sophomore starting pitcher Matt Smith (Cranberry Twp., Pa./Seneca Valley) both earned their fourth BIG EAST weekly honor with their play over the weekend in Georgetown’s series win at Butler.

Georgetown Outhits UMBC but Falls 4-3
The Georgetown baseball team outhit the University of Maryland-Baltimore County (UMBC) 10-7, including six doubles, but it was not enough as the Hoyas fell 4-3 Wednesday night to the Retrievers at Shirley Povich Field.

Anderson batted .500 (8-for-16) in four games last week with a home run, four doubles, five RBI, a .556 on-base percentage and a .938 slugging percentage. He went 4-for-5 in Friday’s series opener at Butler with a single, home run, two doubles and three RBI, all in his first four at-bats. He went 2-for-4 on Saturday with another double and RBI and added his fourth double on Sunday. He also scored five runs on the week.

Smith matched his career high when he went eight innings in Friday’s 5-2 win at Butler. He gave up just two runs on five hits while striking out five. He lowered his season ERA to 3.21 and is tied for the team lead in wins with five.  In his last two starts, covering 16 innings pitched, Smith is 2-0 with a 15 strikeouts while giving up just nine hits and two runs.

Tuesday’s starter…

Freshman left-hander Chris Giordano (Orlando, Fla./Lake Highland) will make his sixth start of the season, and 13th overall appearance, on Tuesday night. He comes in with a 1-2 record and a 9.51 ERA in 35 innings on the season to go along with one save.  


 

 

Hoyas’ Quick Hitters …

Nick Collins (Carthage, N.C./Union Pines) continues to lead the Hoyas with a .355 batting average and leads the entire BIG EAST with 65 base hits. He is also second on the team with two home runs and 37 RBI. Anderson is second on the team with a .343 batting average and 12 doubles. He leads the Blue & Gray with five home runs and 45 RBI. Patrick Camporini (Safety Harbor, Fla./Clearwater Central Catholic), who is batting .279 with a .413 on-base percentage, has reached base safely in 31-consecutive games.

Georgetown’s pitching staff is led by Matt Hollenbeck (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) who is 5-2 with a 3.18 ERA in 18 outings, including four starts, covering 51 innings. His 50 strikeouts are second on the team with Smith, who comes in with team-highs in strikeouts (55) and innings pitched (84). He is also second in ERA at 3.21. David Ellingson (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands College Park has a 3.38 ERA in 58.2 innings over 13 appearances and eight starts. He is third on the team with 38 strikeouts. Tim Davis (Vienna, Va./James Madison) has a 3.86 ERA and is tied for third in the BIG EAST with seven saves.

Scouting UMBC…

The Retrievers come in at 15-27 overall and 6-15 in the America East Conference. They defeated the Hoyas 4-3 last week at Shirley Povich Field before being swept at home in a three-game series by Stony Brook.

Hunter Dolshun leads UMBC with a .308 batting average and three home runs and is second with 21 RBI. Mark Esposito is second in hitting, coming in at a .298 clip. Jake Barnes leads the team with 26 RBI.

Right-hander Shane Vlasic will start for the Retrievers on Tuesday, coming in with a 3-1 record and a 5.60 ERA in 11 appearances, and six starts, covering 35.1 innings.
