WASHINGTON – As many Georgetown students partake in summer jobs and internships, 13 Hoyas from the Georgetown baseball team are spread out around the country, playing for various summer collegiate teams.
Rising junior catcher Nick Collins (Carthage, N.C./Union Pines) headlines the list, playing in the prestigious Cape Cod Baseball League for the Chatham Anglers. Collins, who was named to the All-BIG EAST First Team as the designated hitter and second team as a catcher, started all 48 games for the Hoyas this season and led the team with a .351 batting average and a .418 on-base percentage. So far, in nine games for Chatham, Collins is batting .217 (5-for-23) with four RBI.
A trio of Hoyas are competing against each other in the local Cal Ripken League, featuring teams in Maryland and Northern Virginia. Rising sophomore second baseman Jake Kuzbel (Ashburn, Va./Stone Ridge) is playing for the Alexandria Aces, batting .276 (8-for-29) in 10 games, tying for fourth on the team in batting average.
Rising junior relief pitchers Tim Davis (Vienna, Va./James Madison) and Felix van der Vaart (Annandale, Va./Flint Hill School) are also in the Ripken League, suiting up for the Vienna Riverdogs and the Herndon Braves, respectively. Davis, who tied for third in the BIG EAST with seven saves, is starting for Vienna. In three starts he is 0-1 with a 2.76 ERA. He leads the staff with 13 strikeouts, averaging a strikeout per inning pitched. Van der Vaart has a 4.50 ERA in six relief appearances, covering six innings.
Rising sophomore pitcher Chris Giordano (Orlando, Fla./Lake Highland) will be playing for the Winter Park Diamond Dawgs of the Florida Collegiate League. Giordano is 0-1 with a 5.22 ERA in five appearances, including two starts.
Two Hoyas are playing against each other in the Coastal Plains League, with teams in Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina. Rising junior pitcher Matt Smith (Cranberry Twp., Pa./Seneca Valley), who stepped in as Georgetown’s Friday night starter, is pitching for the Forest City Owls of the Coastal Plains League. Smith is 4-0, tied for the league lead in wins, with a 2.74 ERA in five appearances covering 23 innings pitched.
Rising sophomore Joseph Bialkowski (Raleigh, N.C./Needham B. Broughton), an outfielder and left-handed pitcher for the Hoyas, is playing for the Florence Redwolves of the Coastal Plains League. So far, in 20 games, Bialkowski is batting .338 (25-for-74) with eight RBI and three doubles. He has also made one appearance on the mound, going two scoreless innings with one strikeout.
Rising senior shortstop Ryan Busch (Falcon Heights, Minn./Roseville Area) is playing in his home state, competing for the Alexandria Blue Anchors in the Northwoods League. In 19 games, Busch is batting .225 (18-for-80), including a home run and six doubles, and eight RBI.
Rising junior catcher Eric Webber (Stockton, Calif./St. Mary’s) will be playing for the Bellingham Bells of the West Coast League in his home state. In six games so far this summer, Webber is batting .348 (8-for-23) with six runs scored and four RBI.
Rising sophomore pitcher David Ellingson (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands College Park) will also stay in his home state for the summer, pitching for the Woodlands Strykers of the Texas Collegiate League. In two appearances, Ellingson is 0-1 with a 9.00 ERA and four strikeouts.
Ryan Toomey (Mendham, N.J./Pingry School), a rising sophomore outfielder, will suit up for the Albany Dutchmen of the New York Collegiate League. In nine games played, Toomey has four hits, including a triple, and four RBI.
Right-handed pitcher Nick Leonard (Washington, D.C./Maret), a rising sophomore, will pitch in the Hamptons League for the Sag Harbor Whalers. In five relief appearances, covering 6.1 innings, Leonard has a 1.42 ERA with three strikeouts.
Charlie Dillon, a transfer from Catholic University who sat out the 2014 season due to NCAA transfer rules, is playing for the BCC Big Train of the Maryland Collegiate Baseball League. In 18 games, Dillon is batting .286 (16-for-56) with five stolen bases, six RBI and eight runs scored.
