WASHINGTON - This summer, 13 current members of the Georgetown baseball team are playing around the country in various summer collegiate baseball leagues. Additionally, five former Hoyas are playing professionally for major league organizations.

Jack Cushing (Flower Mound, Texas/Marcus) and Brent Killam (Nokomis, Fla./Venice) are both pitching for the St. Cloud (Minn.) Rox in the Northwoods League. Cushing has made five starts and owns a 2-1 record with a 2.10 ERA and 26 strikeouts in 30 innings. He did not allow a run over his first three starts, going 2-0 with a 19-2 strikeout-to-walk ratio. Killam has make nine appearances out of the bullpen, going 1-0 with four saves while compiling 19 strikeouts in 10.2 innings and a 0.84 ERA
Three Hoyas -- Alex Bernauer (Sunnyvale, Calif./Fremont), Casey Goldenberg (North Palm Beach, Fla./Suncoast Community) and Sammy Stevens (Birmingham, Mich./Brother Rice) -- are all playing locally for the Herndon (Va.) Braves in the Cal Ripken League. Bernauer is batting .225 (16-for-71) in 20 games. He is fourth on the team with 11 runs scored and 10 RBI. Stevens has played just eight games due to injury but is batting .333 (8-for-24) with a double, a home run and four RBI. Goldenberg is 0-1 in four starts with a 4.95 ERA.
Michael DeRenzi (Mendham, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) is suiting up for the Charlottesville (Va.) Tom Sox in the Valley League. He is batting .235 (4-for-17) in eight games with a double. Additionally, Austin Shirley (Strafford, Pa./Conestoga) was on the Tom Sox for the first week of the season on a temporary contract, scoring four runs in five games.
Ryan Davis (Danville, Calif./San Ramon Valley) and Richie O'Reilly (Hermosa Beach, Calif./Loyola HS) are teammates on the Long Beach Legends in the California Collegiate League. Davis is batting .343 (12-for-35) in 20 games with three doubles and five RBI. O'Reilly has appeared in nine games, batting .333 (8-for-24) also with three doubles and five RBI.
Nick Morreale (Lake Elmo, Minn./St. Thomas Academy/IMG Academy), who set Georgetown's single-season appearances record (30) as a freshman, and Wilson Salomon (Greenwich, Conn./Brunswick) are teammates for the Sag Harbor (N.Y.) Whalers in the Hamptons Collegiate League. Morreale has appeared in eight games with one start, registering a 6.58 ERA and 20 strikeouts in 13.2 innings. In eight games, Salomon has two hits, including a double, and an RBI.
Noah Abdalla (Raleigh, N.C./Northern Highlands [N.J.]) is pitching for the Carolina Pirates in the Carolina-Virginia Collegiate League. In two starts, covering 8.2 innings, Abdalla is 1-1 with a 2.08 ERA and 12 strikeouts.
Freddy Achecar III (Atlanta, Ga./Lovett School) is playing for the Norcross (Ga.) Astros in the Sunbelt League. He is batting .256 (10-for-39) in 13 games with a double and five runs scored.
Jeremiah Burke (Delmar, N.Y./Bethlehem Central/La Salle Institute) is suiting up for the Albany (N.Y.) Dutchmen in the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League. Burke has made four appearances, including two starts and owns a 1.92 ERA in 14 innings, striking out 11 and walking just one.
Simon Mathews (C'17) signed a free agent deal with the Los Angeles Angels on June 21. He made his professional debut with the Angel's Arizona League team and has made two one-inning relief appearances, giving up one run on two hits with a strikeout.
Tim Adleman (N'10) is in his second season with the Cincinnati Reds after making his Major League debut last May. This season, he is 5-4 with a 4.62 ERA and 68 strikeouts in 74 innings. He is second on the team in wins, innings pitched and strikeouts. His story of perseverance in reaching the major leagues was recently featured in the Washington Post.
David Ellingson, who was drafted by the Seattle Mariners following his junior year in 2016, is pitching for the Everett AquaSox -- Seattle's short season rookie team. In five appearances, he is 0-2 with three saves. After 12 scoreless appearances last year, Ellingson has only allowed runs in two of his 17 career appearances, registering a 3.00 ERA with six saves.
Matt Smith (B'16), who was drafted six picks ahead of Ellingson by the Milwaukee Brewers, will miss the 2017 season due to injury. He pitched at three different levels last summer, compiling a 4.13 ERA and 39 strikeouts in 48 innings.
Curtiss Pomeroy (C'16), who signed a free agent contract with the New York Yankees last July, made his season debut for the Yankees' Gulf Coast League team on June 27. He did not allow an earned run in an inning of work, registering his first career strikeout.
