Georgetown 72, UConn 69
Verizon Center
Washington, D.C.

Georgetown Head Basketball Coach John Thompson III

On Connecticut in the first half ...
I think in the first half they were terrific. They came out and did what they wanted to do. I think we did a great job of helping them do what they wanted to do, meaning our execution in the first was horrible. They turned turnovers into points, we had eight turnovers in the first half and only two in the second.

On Georgetown's offense from first to second half...
Just in the rhythm of the game we were taking quick contested shots and we weren't making [Connecticut] work on the defensive end. We scored 25 points in the first half and 47 in the second half and part of the halftime talk was let's not shoot so fast, lets slow it down and we'll score more. Not for the sake of slowing it down, but we were taking contested shots, we were taking bad shots, we weren't working through looking for where the holes were and were the open man. In the second half we did a much better job of executing and finding our advantages and staying with our offense a little longer to where we got better shots that went in.

On Georgetown's increased offensive rebound total in the second half...
Part of it was we were taking a lot of contested threes. We were taking long shots that they ended up with that immediately turned into points. Also, it was clear what was happening in the first half. We would have a bad offensive possession that turned into an easy basket for them. We talked about getting better offensive possessions and positioning to get more rebounds. Julian Vaughn coming down the stretch had that big tip in and the one that he tipped the Greg ended up getting.

On Georgetown's defense in the second half...
Our offense made our defense better. We were getting better shots and we were able to set up our defense. The guys circled the wagons around each other. They did a better job in the second half communicating with each other to let them know what was coming and what they were trying to get. And we were lucky, you go through all that and they still had a couple of good looks that didn't go down, but I thought our focus and attention to detail in the second half was the difference. In the first half we were just running around. They realized it and our focus in the second half was significantly better.

On Austin Freeman...
Austin was rolling, he did a terrific job of getting to the basket. He's done a terrific job lately of seeking contact and getting to the rim and he did that in the second half today. I've said this several times, we have a lot of guys in that room that can score. One day it will be 10, another day it will be 15, another day it will be 4 or 21. This is an unselfish group and I think they're doing a very good job at both ends of the floor for the most part. We've had breakdowns, but for the most part at both ends of the court the notion of how can I help my teammate get a shot, they're doing it. Austin was rolling, the guys were unselfish and that's when we're at our best.

Connecticut Coach Jim Calhoun

Opening statement...
"First thing, congratulations to Georgetown. Obviously to be down 15 at halftime is not insurmountable at home. It's tough but certainly congratulations to them. I thought a couple things they did. First thing they had Austin Freeman in uniform that helps an awful lot. He is a bonafide, terrific big-time player who made big time shots."

On Austin Freeman...
"Freeman just overwhelmed them. Then we put Stanley (Robinson) on him (Freeman). He can play that kind of player and he can't go to the rim against Stanley."

On their play in the first half...
"We came out and played our best basketball of the year in the first 20 minutes. We imposed our will inside and outside (in the first half).

On what Georgetown did to comeback...
"They made good defensive adjustments. They played good man to man defense when they had to. With good systems like Georgetown's, they will get the ball to the right players in the right places. Georgetown won the game. I thought we got beat."

Georgetown Players Postgame Quotes

Greg Monroe
On offensive rebounds in the second half...
"Throughout the game I (thought) we had chances to do it. In the second half.... They didn't have as many players going in (to rebound) so I think we had an advantage to get offensive rebounds in the second half."

On becoming more aggressive offensively in the second half...
"I needed to become more active everywhere. It's never just an offensive game. Basically, getting more active on defense and make hustle plays, get rebounds."

Austin Freeman
On thoughts going into the second half with a 15 point deficit...
"That we are not going to die down. We are going to come to fight and hopefully just come out and play as hard as we can and come out with a victory that's what is going on around our locker room, pretty much staying focused and just playing hard."

On the flow of the game...
"When I hit them, I just came back, got back on defense because we had to get back because as soon as we scored they came right back down. I wasn't thinking if I was hot or not.

On 2nd half scoring...
"I was just being aggressive. My teammates got me open and they left me open so I just took the shots and kept staying aggressive."

On this year's focus...
"The first couple of years (at Georgetown) I really wasn't as focused as I am now. Now, I want to win. I'll do whatever I have to do to win. "

On his advantages against Connecticut...
"We talked about it in practice that I had an advantage on the offensive side. So whenever I got the ball I tried to attack, be aggressive when (I was in those) situations."
