Balanced Effort Leads Georgetown Past No. 7 Michigan State, 64-60

NEW YORK - Senior guard Markel Starks (Accokeek, Md./Georgetown Prep) scored 16 points, had four assists and two rebounds to lead three players in double figures as Georgetown used a balanced effort en route to a 64-60 win over No.7 Michigan State at Madison Square Garden Saturday afternoon.

Sophomore guard D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central/Oak Hill) scored 12 points and had eight rebounds, while junior forward Mikael Hopkins (Hyattsville, Md./DeMatha) had s10 points, three rebounds and four blocks and senior forward Nate Lubick (Southborough, Mass./St. Marks) added eight points and six rebounds.

The Hoyas improved to 12-9 overall.

The Hoyas trailed at the break but used an early run in the second half to open up an eight-point lead, 44-36, midway through the half. GU still led by four, 52-48, after a free throw from Michigan State's Gary Harris, but Hopkins scored on a dunk and then hit two free throws with 1:48 to play to make it 56-51. Harris hit a three-pointer to cut the gap to two points, but junior forward Jabril Trawick (Philadelphia, Pa./Abington Friends) tipped in a missed basket and gave GU a 58-54 lead with 1:07 to play.

Georgetown trailed by a point, 30-29, at the break, but scored the first five points of the second half and took a 34-30 lead after a three-pointer freshman forward Reggie Cameron (Hackensack, N.J./Hudson Catholic) and a jumper from Starks. That was part of a larger 15-6 run over the opening 8:40 of the second half as GU took a 44-36 lead on a jumper in the lane from senior forward Moses Ayegba (Kano, Nigeria/Progressive Christian [Md.]) with 11:04 to play in the game.

The first half was back and forth with five ties and six lead changes and Michigan State holding a 30-29. The Hoyas jumped out a quick 4-0 lead after baskets from Hopkins and scored five-straight points to take a 13-8 lead on a one of two free throws from Starks at 13:55. The lead was cut to 44-40 on a jumper from Gary Harris, but the Hoyas responded with s layup from Trawick and a layup from Lubick, where he inbounded the ball off the back of a Michigan State player, to take a 48-42 lead at 7:05.

The Spartans pulled to within 50-48 on a three-pointer from Harris with 4;00 on the clock, but Starks responded, hitting a mid-range jumper to make it 52-48 with 3:30 play.

Michigan State used a 10-0 run over 2:05 to take an 18-13 lead on a three-pointer from Gary Harris at the 10:05 mark, but the Hoyas scored five-straight and tied the game at 18-all on a conventional three-point play from Smith-Rivera with 7:04 to play in the half. The Spartans took a 24-20 lead on a three-point from Kenny Kaminski, but the Hoyas responded with a 6-2 spurt over 1:50 and took a 26-24 lead on free throws from Smith-Rivera with 2:09 left. GU fell behind 30-27 but free throws from Lubick cut the margin to one at the break.

Georgetown continues its two-game road swing on Monday, Feb. 3, visiting BIG EAST Conference rival DePaul. The game tips off at Allstate Arena at 9 p.m. It will be shown live on Fox Sports 1, with Eric Collins and Stephen Bardo calling all of the action.
